Head chef at the Red Lion in Freshwater, Sean Jeffers, is in the running to be crowned Best Pub Chef in the 2022 Great British Pub Awards.
This year’s awards, sponsored by the likes of Sky, Coca-Cola and Heineken, have seen a record number of entrants, making Sean’s shortlisting all the more impressive.
Sean’s passion for cooking came from a school food technology lesson, and he knew from there that he wanted to peruse a career in this field. He has worked in different roles, including previously having been the head chef at the Ale & Oyster in Ventnor.
Speaking about his nomination, Sean has said:
“I am privileged to be shortlisted for such an award alongside the wonderful team at The Red Lion. It is great to have my work recognised and have so much support from everyone at the pub and all the customers who thoroughly enjoy the food. The Red Lion is a local pub, and we showcase this through our food and drink offerings, sourcing everything from the Isle of White area.
“The Great British Pub Awards is such a big event for the pub industry, and it is an achievement in itself being nominated again within these prestigious awards.”
Sean has been shortlisted for the award alongside 5 other chefs from London, Suffolk, Cumbria and Somerset. He will find out if he has been crowned the winner at a special ceremony in Manchester on 4th October.
2021’s winner of Best Pub Chef was Gordon Stott from The Purefoy Arms in Basingstoke.
Described as The Oscars of the pub industry, the Great British Pub Awards mark an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic industry and individual pub’s successes.

I have had some pretty decent meals there to be fair.
Well done Sean, if ever I am in the area will make a point of dropping in and trying one of your dishes, having won the prestigious Pub of the Year Award, the Red Lion will be a good recommendation to others for a visit also. Well Done.
