Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel has confirmed that work to repair the linkspan in Southampton will take place this weekend.
A long-awaited part that is required to repair the linkspan – the bridge that connects the ferry to dry land – has arrived and engineers are scheduled to fit it on Saturday night, subject to weather conditions.
For several months delays have been experienced on the busy East Cowes to Southampton vehicle ferry service as staff have been unable to load/unload the upper and main decks at the same time.
Addressing customers this evening, a spokesperson for Red Funnel has said:
“We do know just how frustrated you’ve been when it comes to how long it’s taken for these parts to get here, and we’ve been just as irritated as you. We’ve been trying our very best to expedite the repair process so we’re really pleased to let you know that the day has finally come.
“We just want to say a massive thank you to all our passengers for their continued patience as we try our best to operate as quick as we can under the current limitations and keep everyone safe at the same time”.
Should everything go to plan then a normal, delay-free timetable is expected to resume on Sunday.
