The boss of Red Funnel has confirmed that the cross-Solent operator is in the process of raising funds to replace their ageing vehicle ferries – and has offered a 50% off voucher to those affected by the company’s recent failings. It’s been revealed that Red Funnel has been scoping out the requirements for its future fleet since last year in a bid to improve the reliability of its service. Last week it was reported that new ferries were on the horizon, but it wasn’t known how far along the plans were. Fran Collins, the Chief Executive, has said that the firm is ‘well underway’ in progressing its vehicle ferry fleet replacement programme, with the company now raising funds to enable its vision for the future to become a reality. Mrs Collins has noted that 2 of their 3 vehicle ferries turn 3o-years-old in 2024 and the ultimate solution to the growing reliability issues is to introduce modern, more sustainable vessels. However, there is still no news on what these ferries will look like, or when they will be delivered. Further news on this is expected ‘soon’, Red Funnel says. Red Osprey and Red Falcon first entered service back in 1994 with Red Eagle introduced some 2 years later. In 2019, Red Kestrel – a freight-only vessel – was introduced.

With decent changes to the board are they going to be customer friendly now?
More borrowing – more debt – higher fares. Bob Seely is saying what we have all known for years about the ferry companies. And he knows we can’t do anything about it. Now he’s shouting because there’s an election coming
Chris Pop Up Bob Knows he’s done !! Worst MP ever and there’s a lot of competition..
Raising funds.. so charging us even more to pay for it then.
Yep be years before they arrive. If its stil a running company.
Maybe they should do a gofundme appeal. I am sure plenty of islanders would be happy to donate.
Any decent company would have been setting money aside over the years knowing their most important assets would need replacing, not paying every last penny to shareholders leaving the coffers bare.
It’s the same with maintenance, proper maintenance schedules would ensure the ships continue to operate without constant breakdowns.
This CEO is running the company for its share holder, the service and public are an inconvenience Red Funnel have no customer service targets .. high cost – max profit no investment in the area most needed.. short sighted CEO !
So how are the two ladies going to do this? I know – let’s squeeze the public a bit more until they squeal and then dissappear into the sunset with a lovely pay off. I do hope that I’m wrong and they will actually deliver on their promises without hammering their customers to pay for it. Time will tell.
They won’t soon be gone with a lage payout…
Saddle it with more debt and pay No tax surprise surprise
We should just boycott them where poss.theyve treated us all like s..t
Appawling.now they want too reap more money with insulting offers.? Bit too late i say
All those apponitments..people plansa messed up? Nah
More lies. It is quite obvious that Red Funnel are in financial difficulty. You don’t get rid of the majority of your board to raise funds! The company has been run into the ground (or should that be the sea) by Fran Collins’ mismanagement. The board should have ousted her with a vote of no confidence rather than resigning, but they could obviously see the writing on the wall.
Ferries apart, where is the new East Cowes terminal that was supposed to have been built by spring this year? Went very quiet on that too, didn’t she.
I don’t think that Red Funnel are in financial strife, but they were bought because they make huge profits, and those profits are used to service the existing debts of the parent companies. I think that the interest payments for the holding company run at about £300+ million a year and the income from RF no longer covers this amount due to interest rises..They were never going to pay into the infrastructure, choosing instead to pocket the profits, pay the loans and give the remainder to shareholders. In the 27 years I have lived here they have been sold before, simply to service debts. It should be illegal, but of course it isn’t. If they don’t make enough money they could be sold off piece by piece, it’s called asset stripping.
More lies they left because of the shit service it has now become..be 5/10 years before new boats come and we know they are going to crap..
If this is the latest statement, it indicates a sorry state of affairs at RF. A well functioning company would not even have to mention such things at all! Would not be a surprise at all if they go bust within a short period.
We will probably see Wightlink paying £1 for it. Remember when Nationwide Anglia sold its Estate Agents back for £1?
I helped with the raising funds this morning as bought a breakfast and tea onboard!!
More fool you then at their rip off prices. I take my own food and drink with me.
Yes, that would probably raised enough funds for 50% of one new boat.
No excuse. As for voucher for those affected on the Saturday. What about us commuters who have been suffering bad service and continual cancellations for over six months – where is our compensation for all the inconvenience caused
Why should red funnel want raise funds for the ferry’s they sting us with high fares and they do make profit as if they have 4 car ferry full during the trips after that the rest is profit the top bosses should pay for it
Stop giving money to shareholders use it to run the business properly
Raising funds, do they mean more price increases!!!
tunells and bridgesonly only need maintenance, no staff involved
