domesticforum2The Isle of Wight Domestic Abuse Forum is working in partnership with Island charities at this year’s Bestival to raise awareness of domestic abuse and sexual violence issues.

The group has attended Bestival for several years, providing information and advice to people attending the festival.

Working under the banner of ‘Reclaim the Night’, the team will set up camp at the top of ‘Peace Hill’ (formerly the Tomorrow’s World field) to weave beautiful bracelets with festival-goers while discussing issues relating to domestic abuse. The group’s stand will be decorated with a giant Easter Island head which was created with the help of Carnival Arts.

The Isle of Wight Council’s domestic abuse coordinator, Fleur Gardiner, said:

“We know that young people aged 16 to 25 are at the highest risk of domestic abuse and sexual assault and we are grateful to the Bestival team for allowing us the opportunity to give a positive message and advice to a  wide range of young people.”

The domestic abuse forum launched a campaign earlier this year to dispel a range of myths about sexual consent and rape. Members of the group will be promoting these messages and offering information and advice to anyone affected by the issues.

Councillor Phil Jordan, Executive member for public protection, said: “It is really important that we raise awareness of these important issues and Bestival, which is attended by thousands of young people – many of whom are from the Island, is an ideal place to share information and advice.”

Anyone is welcome to visit the team under the Easter Island Heads to chill, create and converse. There will be a safe space available for anyone who needs to talk to specialist staff.
