A very brave 4-year-old boy was invited back to St Mary’s Hospital this week to ‘ring the bell’ to signal the end of his treatment for cancer.
Ryan Thomson, from Ryde, has been receiving treatment for a myofibroblastic tumour which has meant he has had to have IV chemotherapy every week for 6 months – then every other week for a further 6 months.
Some of his treatment has been at Southampton and the majority of treatment at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport.
Rayn’s mum, Rebecca said:
“It has been the hardest year of our lives but we are truly grateful.
“Rayn was only one year old when he first began receiving treatment and we found out that he needed to have chemotherapy just before he turned three. It was a very scary time for us but the care and support we have received on the Island has been absolutely second to none. The care has been so personal and it’s the little things that have helped us get through week by week.
“Staff remembering the stickers he liked and how he liked his observations done and always bringing things they knew he liked out with them on home visits helped so much. The team at St. Mary’s have become an extension of our family and we are really going to miss them.
“The care that we have received has just been exceptional and we will be forever grateful to the doctors and to all the Children’s ward and community staff. They are incredible and we are super grateful to each and every one of them.”
