Members of the Isle of Wight Radio Society took to the air over the weekend (Saturday), as part of International Marconi Day, operating a special amateur radio station from The Needles.
The station was set up close to the historic site of the former Royal Needles Hotel, where radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi carried out some of his early wireless experiments and made transmissions that shaped the future of global communications.
Throughout the day, club members used amateur radio equipment to make contact with other radio operators across the UK and around the world. Using a range of radio bands, the team exchanged signals with stations in many different locations, demonstrating that radio remains a fascinating, practical and international hobby more than a century after Marconi’s pioneering work.
International Marconi Day is an annual event celebrated by radio enthusiasts worldwide. It commemorates Marconi’s contribution to wireless communication and encourages radio clubs to operate from places connected with his life and experiments.

“The Isle of Wight has a very special place in the history of radio, and The Needles is one of the most important locations in that story. International Marconi Day gives us a chance to celebrate that heritage while showing that amateur radio is still alive, active and relevant today. It was fantastic to speak to stations around the world from the very place where Marconi helped prove what wireless communication could do.”
Amateur radio, sometimes known as ham radio, is a technical hobby that allows licensed operators to communicate locally, nationally and internationally using radio equipment. The hobby includes voice communication, digital modes, Morse code, satellites, emergency communications, antenna building and radio experimentation.
The Isle of Wight Radio Society welcomes anyone with an interest in radio, electronics, or communications. No previous experience is needed, and the club supports new members who want to learn more or work towards an amateur radio licence.
The club meets every Friday at 19:30 at Haylands Farm, Ryde.
