There was a disturbance on the streets of Pan last night (Monday) when members of the public tried to intervene during the arrest of a suspected drug driver in Newport.
At 22:45, officers stopped a vehicle on Robin Hood Street due to the manner of its driving. Suspecting the driver was impaired, he was taken aside for a roadside drug wipe to be conducted.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has aid that during the roadside test, a group of members of the public approached the police vehicle and made efforts to intervene.
The driver of the stopped vehicle is also alleged to have become aggressive and abusive towards officers during this incident.
It has been confirmed that a 24-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and using threatening/abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
He has since been released from custody but remains under investigation while further enquiries are conducted.
