A fire at Sandown’s derelict Ocean Hotel last night (Monday) was started deliberately Police have said. Crews from Cowes, Newport, Ventnor and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Ryde were called to the scene shortly after 19:00, with officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary joining them quickly after. Island Echo readers reported seeing no flames, but instead smoke issuing out of broken windows and doors on the High Street side of the abandoned premises. The smell of smoke is filling the evening sky. High Street was blocked for a while whilst firefighters used hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze. A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson has said:
“It’s believed that the fire was started deliberately. Police continue to investigate this incident jointly with the fire service.”
Over the years, the Ocean Hotel has caught fire numerous times and is now a common hang-out spot for squatters and vandals.

This is what happens when two tier Keir takes away heating allowance from old people. The aged start bonfires.
If you have information on this it’s your duty to report it to the police.
You actually took time to write that
Can’t believe it took the police to work that out I could have told you that without even leaving my house
They are so clever aren’t they. Have they worked out it was low life feral brats too that aren’t tagged or on curfew like they should be?
Grow up gramps
Yeah, because perish the thought that it might have something to do with the owners
It’s obvious it was done deliberately, the owners of these abandoned places should be fined for leaving them derelict and open to people getting inside and starting fires.
All a ploy to get easy permission for full demolishing of a fine building to fill with dingy contents to enrich our society as they allegedly do in every place and country they choose to impose themselves upon.
That or flats and HMO ‘s for our own drug , drunk, mentally unstable , all to incapable to work but can always breed, fight, and find pubs and off licence establishments to spend our extra costs on taxes and council tax.
Honestly, better keeping it as it is , far cheaper for us than keeping hundreds
What a daft comment. All these instances mean one thing. Luxury holiday apartments that bring nothing to the local economy
Wouldn’t be far to go,most of them hanging out in shelter opposite .
I blame IW Council they are letting an UNSAFE building be at risk
to everyone.
Time to take control of the property and have it demolished.
It’s obvious the so called owners couldn’t care less.
Who is responsible if someone gets killed in this UNSAFE Building
The owners or IW Council
No neither, the trespasser will have themself to blame if anything happens to them when breaking into an unsafe building
The total lack of security does not help.
And what happened to that litigation the council was bringing against the owners?
Everything seems to gone very quiet on that front – can we get an update on current progress and future plans from the council?
Just allowing it to get more and more dangerous until someone is killed is not acceptable.
Oh, and because I know the council will definitely consider it, neither is shutting the high street indefinitely due to the “unsafe building(s)”.
No s sherlock!
Why is it so hard too force the several owners too sort this eyesaw
Just tear the darned eyesore down and be done with it.
Deliberate??
How did Hampshires finest reach that decision??
This could surely have been down to any paying hotel guest accidentally leaving a hairdryer or electric blanket turned on, while they went to the bar for the night.
U bunch of grumpy old biddys
