Police have erected a cordon on the Blackwater to Merstone cycle track this evening (Monday) following a sudden death in the area.
Officers have closed the public car park at the former Merstone Railway Station with cyclists and pedestrians having to divert via Rookley or Blackwater.
Island Echo understands that an individual has sadly died, but the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Hampshire Constabulary were called to the scene sometime before 18:00.
The cycle path is expected to re-open shortly.
UPDATE – Police have confirmed that a member of the public is thought to have suffered an unexpected medical issue.
The cycle track has reopened.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called at around 4.30pm yesterday following the discovery of the body of a man believed to be in his 70s on Merstone cycle track, near the old railway station.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”
