Just days after yet another hotel fire in Sandown, Police have moved to issue a Community Protection Notice warning to the owners of the derelict Parkbury Hotel.
Firefighters rushed to The Broadway on 12th July when smoke was seen coming from the building, with fears that squatters may have been trapped inside.
6 pumping appliances from Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde, Newport, East Cowes, Cowes and Freshwater, an Aerial Ladder Platform from Newport and the Incident Command Unit from Newport were all mobilised to the incident, alongside the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Police. Firefighters from the mainland were drafted in to maintain fire cover across the Island.
Now, very much in the same way that authorities have cracked down on the owners of The Ocean Hotel, also in Sandown, Hampshire Constabulary has issued a warning to the hotel’s owners in the wake of the fire.
Those responsible for the Parkbury have been told that they must secure the site in order to protect the community, reduce anti-social behaviour and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. If they don’t then a Community Protection Notice (CPN) may be served which makes it a legal requirement to follow the Police’s instructions. Failure to comply is a criminal offence.
A CPN was recently issued against The Ocean Hotel, whose owners have failed to comply and have been summonsed to court.
Both The Parkbury Hotel and The Ocean Hotel were once owned by the Carlauren Group and were sold off separately following the company’s collapse.
The 40-bedroom Parkbury Hotel was put on the market in April 2021 for £450,000. The hotel had been trading up until March 2019 but shut its doors when things went belly up with Carlauren.
It might of been a fire, but we don’t have arson on the island. Just unexplained fires.
So sad for The Parkbury as lots of the wooden panelling interior is from RMS Aquitania. History at its best… Interestingly, some hotels in Sandown (which keep having fires) are owned by the family group which owns the old arcade site in Ventnor. Which eyesore recently had a very non-suspicious fire.
So was it arson then? Silly question I know but interested in what the police investigation found?

Shouldn’t be in there in the first place. They ignore the law on property rights, so perhaps their right to assistance by the fire brigade, which is paid for by taxpayers (squatters contribute nothing) should also be ignored.
Squatting abandoned commercial properties is legal… and most squatters will be paying taxes. Are you a troll?
This is all very well and very virtuous. BUT how about some policing hours spent on tackling actual CRIME???
The Police are trying the new thinking as parents now do to young children, being nice and kind and treating all kindly, hoping that they will respond in the same way.
The idea being if you are spoken to aggressively then you will respond in a likewise manner.
By understanding peoples issues they hope that people will become more respectful and caring themselves.
It clearly will not be an over night process so be patient and show kindness to all people and lets help this new thinking.
I said this was the thin end of the wedge when the first CPN was issued, now they are on a roll – be flinging them round like confetti soon. Make sure you property is nice an neat peeps or you might get one………..Maybe if the police spent some time actually tackling CRIME and not virtue signalling we might catch some of the arsonists…(which we apparently dont have)
