Police have closed a busy road in Ryde this rush hour (Monday) as a result of a pedestrian being hit by a car.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have placed a male onto a spinal board at the side of the carriageway on Great Preston Road, at the junction with High Park Road.
A white Audi A3 has stopped at the scene.
The road has been closed whilst emergency services deal with the incident, which occurred at just gone 17:00.
UPDATE @ 18:15 – Police have now cordoned off the area to create a sterile environment in which to gather measurements and evidence from the scene.
The car appears to have been struck on the windscreen on the nearside.
1 male has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for assessment and treatment.
The road remains closed at this time between Smallbrook Lane and Nicholson Road, with the junction of High Park Road also closed.

Yep, another idiot Island driver will be along soon…
Pedestrian hit by car driver.
Every busy road should have hidden cameras now. They are dirt cheap, really clear and would pay for themselves in months here from fines or car seizure and then sold on. They need no ‘film’ an internal chip can be overwritten on the odd day that NO accidents occur.
When Ryde is doubled in size the road congestion and consequent accidents to other motorists and pedestrians will be carnage.
Let’s hope this guy makes full recovery.
GREAT PRESTON ROAD IS A SPEEDWAY, ONE DAY SOMEONE WILL GET KILLED OR BADLY INJURED.
THIS ROAD NEEDS SPEED HUMPS TO MAKE MOTORISTS SLOW DOWN.
ON THE ISLAND THE COUNCIL HIGHWAYS SEEM TO HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT ROAD SAFETY.
SHOCKING!
Speed bumps have caused no end of damage to vehicles on the island. They seem to have no limits to the mountains they put up here.
Speed cameras, fine. Speed bumps are a menace to all our cars and shock absorbers.
I’ll give you one example.. upton road by st mary close. I can’t get over that one without scraping and have to divert via Bettesworth road.
We shouldn’t have to own a 4×4 to drive around without causing damage to our vehicles.
Typical comment from your standard car driver, me , me, me. What about the damage done to peoples lives from drivers going to fast in residential areas just to arrive 10 seconds earlier for their so import trip? So utterly selfish.
That is true, but lives are more important than damage to vehicles.
I agree with you John ,this road is ridiculous busy and cars always speeding. I feel that one day I am going to have a accident trying to get off our drive. We live on a curve in the road , to our right we have vans parked, I have to open my window to listen if anything is coming in that direction, it’s a nightmare. Had a few near misses .
Carolyn, yes I know the curve, and often the council houses opposite have cars and a van parked on the pavement. This creates more of a hazard for drivers on that bend, so it must be awful for you.
I have seen the Van, but there seems to be no rules about parking on PAVEMENTS
Along this road.
I would have double yellow lines and warning signs about parking on PAVEMENTS.
TOW the F–kers away!
The funny thing is the idiots parking on the pavements probably cannot read!
HENCE THEIR STUPIDTY AND CAUSING DANGER TO LIVES!
THE ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL SEEM TO BE USELESS WITH ROAD SAFETY!
SEE THE VAN IS PARKED ALONG GREAT PRESTON ROAD AGAIN OUTSIDE NUMBER 90
ON THE PAVEMENT CAUSING AN OBSTRUCTION.
DOES NO ONE OF AUTHORITY NOTICE THIS WHEN THEY DRIVE DOWN THIS ROAD!
ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL HIGHWAYS ARE USELESS.
BUSES, AMBULANCES AND FIRE ENGINES USE THIS ROAD ALL THE TIME, ESPECIALLY BEING
THE FIRE STATION IS IN NICHOLSON ROAD.
ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL COULD NOT STOP A BUS or TAXI
So so true.
Vehicles are parked both sides of the Road.
I am certain there are is NO Highway safety along this Road.
Far too many people use this Road, it is busier than Marlborough road.
John I can assure you Marlborough Road is busy enough with boy racers normally, as is Appley Road/Calthorpe Road. I get a grandstand view. And where are they all going? A big supermarket car park and then a big yellow sign for supper. There are no speed deterrents anywhere anymore, like you say it is just a matter of time.
The Island is a backward place.
Speed Cameras generate money, also saves lives.
It is 2020 the Island needs to move forward.
The money raised from the fines etc could be given to help
The Local Hospital
For some reason the Leaders of the IW Council do not have a lot of idea!
BAN SPEEDERS!
The council don’t care as they live well away from such. As I don’t care how busy the M1 is.
Vote them out next time
THE ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL SEEM TO HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO RUN A PLACE!
THEY SHOULD ALL BE SENT TO WESTMINSTER TO HAVE TRAINING AND SEE HOW TO RUN
A PLACE!
And a quick squirt of paint to the lens, or grease, and bobs your dad’s brother!
Hence I said ‘hidden’.
They are small enough now.
More bad Audi’s on the Isle of Wight
No need to tell it was an Audi; we could have guessed
