39 eco lodges could be built in Gurnard under plans to create one of the first net-zero holiday villages in the UK.
Developer ZED Eco Homes has this week unveiled plans to create an eco-tourism offering in a currently empty field next to Gurnard Pines.
Under the plans, the lodges would sit around an extensive meadow situated at the heart of the site. Existing mature woodland would be almost entirely retained with the idea that the site would be hard to see from the existing Gurnard Pines resort, blending in with nature.
The prefabricated lodges would all be 2-bedroom but some would feature a communal deck, allowing families to join together to create a 4-bedroom accommodation. Each lodge would come complete with electric car charging points but there would also be a pool of EV microcars and e-bikes available to guests too.
The village, off Cockleton Lane, would boast a cafe/bar selling local food and craft ales, as well as an on-site laundrette. There are also plans for a pool of communal sailing dinghys with an accompanying electric 4×4, allowing visitors to tow boats to Gurnard slipway for fun on the Solent.
All of the lodges, bikes and pool vehicles could be powered by ZED LTO batteries, charged by solar roofs. The vision is that the site would have off-grid capability, only taking power from the mains in the depths of winter or at off-peak times when demand is unusually high.
ZED Eco Homes is a developer of affordable eco homes made in the UK, designed by the ZED Power architectural team led by Bill Duster OBE. Bill’s first major eco-development in Sutton, Surrey, of 100 mixed home and home/work units, was designed in the late 1990s and built in 2001.
Members of the public are invited to a public meeting about the project at Gurnard Pines cafe on Tuesday 31st May at 18:00. At the meeting, the developers will discussed the proposed planning application, including the proposed access via Cockleton Lane. A keynote speech will be delivered by Bill Duster OBE. Representations may be sent by e-mail to [email protected].
The local road infrastructure can barely support Gurnard Pines. let alone another loony development, which will not be as this plan suggests – it will be modified with more units and less green aspects etc etc.
another scheme to build more houses on another green field site, only this time they are dressing it up in lots of green buzzwords to make it look more appealing
no is the answer..it is still more people, more cars and more pollution on the island
It’s an Eco site, Electric cars you numpty! Read it properly.
before you insult people sharon, perhaps you would consider doing some research – trees will be cut down, wildlife habitat will be lost, more people means more rubbish generated, more demand on infrastructure, more congestion on the roads, more people at the doctors, dentists, schools – more queues everywhere. Hardly eco is it.
the word eco, is just a buzzword, that is a pathetic attempt at justifying the destruction of the environment, to continue with the pointless increase in population policy that this council seem to adhere to, whilst preaching about a climate emergency and biosphere status.
@isle of wighter how will the schools, dentist and doctors get more busy when these are holiday lets, At no point does this article state there are for sale, this would bring more money to the isle of wight after a horrendous 2 years through the pandemic,
because, as I am sure you are already aware, the current “tourism” parks on the island have some “permanent lets” – which people on benefits live in all year round. When the “lets” are deemed no longer viable, especially in winter – guess what – it will be full of unwanted benefit claimants from the mainland.
where will someone on holiday go, for emergency dental or doctors help?, what about the mess they will create -refuse/sewage etc and not everyone is going to have an electric car, are they. No, this will just be another environmental destruction plan, designed to line the pockets of vested interests – no one else
I doubt people on holiday here will go to a dentist or doctor, certainly wont send their kids to school whilst here. 2.5 million people holiday here over the holiday season anyway, this will hardly create an excess will it.
Existing mature woodland would be almost entirely retained with the idea that the site would be hard to see from the existing Gurnard Pines resort, blending in with nature.
………..
Really – the existing mature woodland already blends with nature, as it is nature – leave it alone to do the job that we need it to do – removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it underground and producing the oxygen that we need to breathe.
can’t these dullards get it – we need trees and plant life to make sure our air is breathable for us to live – we need the insects and creatures to ensure that nature survives.
It amazes me, the part where you join up with next door, which is other half of the building you are in… How soundproof are they… these are not proper built brick houses, which you can hear your neighbor’s TV !! Another thing, since the back row is close to front, if one catches fire….. Although they are not as close to each other as those stupid places out Atherfield !!
Another project that is not really needed…. if Island wants more people to visit.. BUILD A TUNNEL… then more companies would come over, creating more jobs hopefully with enough pay to be able to afford the other new homes being built throughout this Island..
Council, if you can read… The ferries take most of visitors money… those that do come here have little left to spend here.
BUILD A TUNNEL
If built would not look anything like pictures… they never do.. Build a hospital instead… Something the Island actually needs..
They could build a new hosptial here but couldn’t fill it as no one wants to work here.
Here we go, let’s wind the NIMBY’s up!
This will cause a lot of tongue wagging ha ha
You won’t be so rude and flippant when the island roads become gridlocked and all the green spaces are gone – it will be welcome to the Isle of Wight the national car park of the U.K.
