McDonald’s has taken the next step towards opening its first restaurant in Cowes, with a detailed public consultation page now live.
It was back in April, as first reported by Island Echo, that news of McDonald’s plans to double its Isle of Wight offering by adding restaurants in Lake and Cowes first broke.
Since then, plans for the Lake branch have been put to the Isle of Wight Council, who last week gave them the green light.
As for the Cowes plans, things have been quiet until a consultation page recently appeared on the McDonald’s website. Despite the lack of a formal planning application at this stage, the detailed consultation page reveals more about proposals for a drive-thru off Three Gates Road.
The proposed new site – opposite Rogerson Close – will sit next to BAE Systems and Van Mossel Esplanade, complementing existing stores in Ryde and Newport.
The application seeks permission to create an indoor seating area for customers, new landscaping to improve biodiversity and enhance the site’s character, and an outdoor patio area
If plans are approved, a car park with 31 on-site spaces, including 1 accessible parking space, 2 grill bays for Drive Thru customers and 2 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging spaces, as well as 10 cycle spaces will be installed.
To combat issues such as littering and anti-social behaviour, a minimum of 3 daily litter picks would be carried out to collect any litter within 150m of the site. In terms of tackling ASB, extensive CCTV equipment would be installed and classical music played inside the restaurant.
As well as the large-scale employment boost, the proposed restaurant could generate between £50,000 – £60,000 in business rates for the Isle of Wight Council.
McDonald’s bosses say:
“Initial findings from our transport studies to date have shown that vehicle movements associated with the restaurant will be 40 vehicles during the morning peak, 48 vehicles during the afternoon/evening peak and 117 vehicles during the Saturday lunchtime peak.”
Residents are urged to give their thoughts on the proposals, here.

McDonald’s are opening up so many drive-thru’s
on the island. I am surprised they are not opening
up along Sandown and Shanklin Esplanade’s.
Much cheaper for holidaymakers and persons who
crave a burger to buy one from McDonald’s than pay
seafront prices for burgers.
Some establishments charge £16.00+
daylight robbery
Hope the plans aren’t thrown out over the silly spelling mistake.
Print the registration of every car going through the drive through onto the packaging the receive.
They need to do that at Ryde, so much rubbish
left round the boating lake.
These drive throughs are a boon for the police, picking up stoners when they get the munchies
Great idea,.. if only it worked like that…
Unfortunatey, the police are far too busy attending, en-masse, minor fracas, involving 60 year-olds at bingo….
You’d think that wouldn’t you, I mean a sniffer dog or two roaming the ferry terminals would have a massive impact, but that’s seems too easy.
Ohh,..
James Berryman will be so excited,..
yet another “attractive and modern dining option” this time “catering to the existing demand within the (Cowes) area”

LOL
I object to the proposed development of a McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant on land at Three Gates Road, Cowes, as outlined in the ongoing public consultation by McDonald’s and anticipated planning application. While I understand the potential for job creation, the chosen location and the nature of the development present significant and unacceptable adverse impacts on our community and environment.
My objections are primarily based on the following planning considerations:
Traffic Congestion and Highway Safety:
Environmental Impact: Litter, Noise, and Light Pollution:
Loss of Green Space and Impact on Local Character:
Public Health and Proximity to Educational Facilities:
Alternative and More Suitable Uses:
For all the reasons stated above, I strongly urge the Isle of Wight Council to refuse any planning application for a McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant at Three Gates Road, Cowes. The proposal fails to demonstrate how it aligns with local planning policies regarding highway safety, residential amenity, environmental protection, and the preservation of local character.
You do realise this is the island echo comment section and not an email to the council? Your copy and paste job is going to do nothing here, you’re wasting your time.
