A petition in which residents of Ventnor are calling for currently closed roads to be opened now is gaining significant traction. The petition – which was only launched by Tom Fahey on Friday – has already amassed more than 1,000 signatures having gathered 500 in just a matter of hours. Within the petition which is addressed to Council Leader Phil Jordan and CEO Wendy Perera, it is claimed that the numerous road closures in the South Wight town including; Leeson Road, Bath Road, and Gills Cliff Road threaten the health and well-being of the town. It is also said that the lack of a plan and timeframes for when repairs are to be completed on the affected routes has left businesses and residents feeling ‘helpless’. Anyone wishing to sign the petition can do so here.

Oh, for pity’s sake, the degree of pure, unadulterated, stupid exhibited by these people is staggering.
Open the damn road, but make these losers sign an affidavit to the effect that they will cover any damages that occur.
Maybe if they were the ones who would have to fork out £millions if someone was killed of left needing long term care they wouldn’t be so quick to stamp their little feet.
I entirely agree with you.
All the ‘serious online momentum’ in the world can’t change the basic facts – the cliff face isn’t safe and the road won’t open before that’s rectified which isn’t quick or simple. Everyone sympathises with those affected but this is Ventnor, geology is both it’s charm and it’s downfall.
Exactly I’ve lived in the town for years & also have a majority of my business there, I’ve chosen to live there & enjoy the benefits of living in such a lovely location, however to scream & shout about “how one pays their council tax/business rates etc” and demand’s the council/Island roads etc etc is beyond insane, it’s nature you bunch of fruitcakes get over yourselves, you choose to live there so ner, it’s the same as moving to Iceland & demanding the government do something about all those pesky vulcano’s
i wonder if you live in Ventnor, we went into Town on Friday from St Lawrence and passed FOUR road closed signs
THEN we still had to pay £2 to park AND we as an area pay the highest Poll tax on the Island, sometimes it seems as if we are an Island on an Island, with soon to be four major routes out closed and only one route open!
“Poll Tax”??
I know it is said that the IOW, and especially Vent or, is behind the times, but Poll Tax!!!… That was scrapped over 30 years ago….
Council tax in Sandown is far higher than Ventnor, but I do agree that you are getting a very bad deal.
IW Council couldn’t open a packet of crisps, yet alone a road.
Lol
Look at the Undercliff, over 20 years and that never re-opened!.
And for your next trick you are going to complain that the council hasn’t done anything to stop the tide going in and out.
It will cost £100s of millions to stabilise that section of road, and even then its liable to slip elsewhere.
What services do you want to cut to pay for it?
Perhaps our Gov could return all dingy contents to wherever a dna swab shows they belong, and we could use the money on just ONE days saving to renew ALL the islands damaged roads, WITHOUT harming ONE true Brit.
We could have stayed in the EU and not had the dinghy problem to begin with.
But I bet you believed the lies of archspiv Frogface and voted for it, didn’t you.
Only got yourself to blame.
Real Brexit never happened, the Government want you to think it happened.
It never will happen.
Ventnor is full of out of work lefties and will never agree with you, from the river to the sea mentality that are thick has two short planks…
I am out of work due to medical retirement, and I am not a left-wing ecoloon who supports anything to do with the “river to the sea” mob, nor ” thick as two short planks”, matey. Yes, I live in Ventnor, since 1993, with my wife who was born in a house in Maderia Road (so this is home for her, and my daughter, born at St. Mary’s Hospital) and very happy here. Voted Brexit and, yes, for Bojo, but will vote #ReformUK this election cycle. The Tories are finished, with their *unelected* leader and PM, and Liebour – well, they are up their own wazoos, but people may protest vote for them, a dangerous decision. Anyway, Cons and Liebs are our uniparty. As for the Lib Dumbs,Greens and other Parties, all equally wasted votes.
The council was given the money to short out undercliff drive 2.9 million they spent the money getting rid of st mary’s roundabout the Ministry of Transport told Isle of Wight Council to leave St Mary’s Roundabout alone there is nothing wrong with it
I live and work in Ventnor but I will not be signing this ridiculous petition. It’s sad to say that you lot won’t be silenced until someone gets seriously hurt, or god forbid, killed!
Yeah it’s a massive inconvenience at the moment but the money simply isn’t there to throw at it willy nilly to get them opened quickly.
the amount of Walkers and cyclists I see going through there they think its great no traffic
Did you go to the meeting in Ventnor 2 months ago? I was there, as being churchwarden at St. Catherine’s Church, Ventnor, dictated that I had to be. The church was PACKED, and I had to turn people away. The IoW council said that the govt had ringfenced millions of £££ for sea defences, which includes the Island and Ventnor, and they had access to over £50 Million to fix them, though it’s still a drop in the ocean (pun intended). I went to the following one, too, and will again, for the same reason and I live in Ventnor. Cans must not be kicked down the road, people should stop dissing this. However, the IoW council need changing unless they stop the virtue signalling spending, and fix things, especially the roads!
Safety is important, yes, and timeframes are difficult to pin down. But what annoys me is they’ve done nothing to promote a less congested journey in the two remaining routes. Parts should be a temporary red route.
Sadly I’ve had to write v-zowww off my list of favourite places due to the current state of the roads. As a bus w⚓ I’m not happy about Gils Cliff Rd. I’m old but not ready to die just yet and preferably not in a southern vectis bus sliding down a cliff type of disaster.
I know it’s crazy to some reckless people but I’m perfectly happy to wait until the experts tell me it’s safe to travel again. I’m not convinced I’ll ever go to v-zowww again though.
I recently discovered that Lyme Regis has had similar issues, and billions were spent stabilising the whole town with massive shafts drilled into the bedrock and regularly checked and serviced. They faced losing the town or saving it. They chose to save it. Does the same choice apply here?
Hopefully the petition will include a reminder to the council that they do not have the legal authority to permanently close an A road – they can only make a recommendation to the Department of Transport.
Even then, they have to provide very strong evidence to support their request.
What like the biggest landslip in recent history, pretty strong evidence to me.
The thing is, all these “business” owners who are moaning about people not being able to use the shops they run are never open much anyway, “closed monday and tuesdays half day wednesday”, and when they are open they only open from 10 until 4, try opening proper hours and you might get more people in, shops like Boots, Co-Op, Tesco, Hurst, the Honda dealer, are all open “proper” shop hours, stop treating Ventnor like it is falling apart and blaming it for you not taking enough money for your “hobby”, do some work and put the hours in, or is it that you sell the sort of stuff that people really don’t want anyway.
Exactly. They should keep their shops open until 7 or 8 pm in the summer and get the evening trade.
