A man in his 40s who was run over by a car in Sandown on New Year’s Eve has sadly died in hospital, Police have confirmed.
It was 2-and-a-half weeks ago, on 31st December, that emergency services received reports of a pedestrian being run over on the roundabout at the junction of Avenue Road, High Street and Culver Parade. This followed earlier reports of a drunken male running in and out of the traffic nearby.
It’s understood the vehicle involved, a grey Nissan Qashqai, had travelled up from the Esplanade and onto the roundabout before striking the pedestrian – who was reportedly in the middle of the road.
The Qashqai driver, a 73-year-old man from Brading, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and released under investigation following initial questioning. Police have not yet confirmed whether or not the suspect has been re-arrested on suspicion of committing a more serious charge.
The casualty was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital and later airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for specialist treatment.
Now, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed to Island Echo that the unnamed male has succumbed to his injuries. He died in Southampton General Hospital earlier this week.
A spokesperson for the force has said:
“We can confirm that a man in his 40s from Sandown has died following a collision on Avenue Road in Sandown on Tuesday 31st December.
“Our investigation is ongoing and we urge anyone with information to come forward.
“If you have information, please call 101 quoting reference 44240566663.”
Very sad news.
I was walking up Beachfield Road in Sandown
this evening, and as usual vehicles were speeding
at 50mph+
“WHY DOES IW COUNCIL ALLOW SPEEDING ?????”
They could easily place a few speed humps, problem
solved.
Will our Roads ever be safe!!
It was reported that he was sat in the middle of the roundabout, completely dressed in black, so the driver never saw him until it was too late.
So please don’t blame the driver until we are all told all of the facts.
I ain’t blaming anyone, but something
Serious needs to be done about speeding
on the island.
Take a walk up Beachfield Road Sandown and see
for yourself the way motorists are speeding.
Another old driver
”If” as looks possible the fatality was the man previously seen in the road either drunk or on drugs or both. Sympathies to the poor driver from Brading. Possibly complete innocent of any offence yet will be with them for rest of their lifes.
”If” as looks possible the fatality was the the old driver most likely blind all slow reactions, poor victim family
Very sad news for the driver. I do hope that common sense prevails and no further action is taken against him. The fault lays entirely with the ‘obstacle’ sitting in the middle of the road dressed in black.
Same issue occurs with cyclists who wear black and ride without lights. Is it really the drivers fault if the cyclist is hit?
We ALL need to take responsibility for our actions on the roads.
so why have the police arrested the driver ? and given him a bad name ..well done..
