UPDATE @ 21:55 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are now standing down from the incident, with control of the scene handed over to the Isle of Wight Council’s building control officers.

It has been confirmed to Island Echo that fire crews were initially called to reports of a collapsed structure with persons reported – people still inside the building.

Amazingly, nobody has been injured in the incident although an elderly lady has been helped from a ground floor flat by firefighters. A second person has managed to self rescue.

The cause of the collapse is currently unclear, but investigations are to be undertaken. Cordons are expected to remain in place for sometime due to the extent of the structural damage.

Engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks and Southern Gas Networks are now attending the incident to isolate supplies.
