Car parking charges on the Isle of Wight will rise just in time for the August Bank Holiday, it has been confirmed by the local authority.
Islanders and visitors will now have to pay 10p more an hour to park in long and short-stay car parks as well as on-street parking places. The increase will also see the tariffs in short-stay car parks rise up to 30p — with the most expensive fee for parking between 2 and 3 hours now at £5.40.
In the more than 40 long-stay car parks across the Island, the most expensive fee will rise by £1 — from £9 to £10 — to park your vehicle between 6 and 10 hours.
The charge to park on Newport High Street, and other short-stay on-street parking areas in the town and in Cowes, will now cost between £1.10 and £4.20 to stay from 30 minutes to up to 2 hours.
Long-stay on-street parking areas in Cowes, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor and Yarmouth will see tariffs rise by up to 80p with the charge to park for between 6 and 8 hours now costing £9.40.
A new charge will also be introduced for heavy commercial, public service and passenger carrying vehicles who intend to park somewhere for 14 to 24 hours, costing £20. Other tariffs for such large vehicles will change by up to £1.40.
The Isle of Wight Council approved the price increases in February as part of the Alliance Administration’s 2022/23 budget and hoped, at the time, to make an extra £98,900.
The increase was originally set to be introduced at the start of July, in time for the summer holidays, but has been delayed. They will now come into effect from 26th August.
It was last month that Island Echo reported on the Isle of Wight Council’s £5million revenue from parking in the 2021/22 tax year, making a profit of well over £3million from hard-pressed Isle of Wight motorists and visiting tourists.
Of the almost £5.2million, ticket machines generated a whopping £3,799,000, whilst parking permits made £633,000. A nifty £597,000 was taken from parking fines – also known as Penalty Charge Notices.

They should increase it by 100% not a poxy 10p
Yeah council why not put the squeeze even more on people. Pure greed, might only be 10p but when you think how many cars will use these car parks.
this wil force shoppers elswere ,the high st shops will suffer
Oh well gotta pay for the 1 hr free parking we we’re allowed in Newport !!!!!!
And of course we need to top up their pension pot, due to inflation we wouldn’t want them to suffer when they retire would we ….
10p here 80p there , no problem will plant more money tree’s…..
Simple ( not) ….
Why don’t we have a boycott day. Let’s thump this council where it hurts the most, in the purse.
I have voiced that opinion here on occasion,
If we put aside division, stand together and collectively, as an island, go on strike teach them that as people United we are strong, and they are answerable to US! we would see a change.
They cannot put us all in prison, the media coverage alone would raise a lot of questions, enough to get them properly investigated maybe.
Time for a revolution.
It’s a practically unregulated, open ended, revenue stream that is quite literally highway robbery.
But, with council budgets being squeezed so tightly you can hardly blame them for using it to balance the books.
Bigger fools who pay to park And load their pockets/ expenses, pensions with nothing in return for the islanders ,,, use your noddle look around you don’t give in to their disgusting prices
Well this is another nail in the coffin for our high streets and all the struggling businesses around the island
this council is full of greed
More greed by the council, parking on any street should be free, only actual land owned by the council and used as a car park should charge
we already pay road tax and a whopping counci tax how much more can this council fleece from the ratepayers
Phew! I was hoping that someone else would be able to fleece us before too long. I’m sure we all have more money than we know what to do with.
Really??? Words fail me
I wrote a comment bit harsher than yours but not been published ???.
totally agree with you.
robbing council we got
Got to pay for cushy pension pots ,early retirements snd short working weeks somehow. Theives!
Yeah me too .. greedy bar stewards .. kill the time off a bit more eh!
Absolute disgrace. But we should expect no better from our greedy overpaid unless councillors
IWC you are so out of touch with the islands residents it’s beyond belief !! Another nail in the coffin of the islands prosperity.
isnt it better to have full car parks at 1/2 the price than an almost empty car park at new rates
you just hit the nail on the head .its like busses when the put up fares this forces people into there cars and of the busses same as the roya mail stamp, its a knock on effect all the time .
I think it’s time to make a stand and boycot the car parks
They want the high streets dead, it suits their plans for pedestrianisation and urban living.
This island is dying, suffocating in the deadly grasp of a frankly evil council.
Was Mr Icke on to somthing?
We may have ridiculed him in the past, but possibly some points he made are gaining credulity, especially those of our council and great leaders.
Icke? The bloke is completely nuts.
If he ever gets something right it will only be in the same way that a stopped clock is right twice a day.
All hail the council and their great leader….and Mr Icke and the lizard people!
Really , now what a surprise….. not …… with our thieving, money grabbing, profiteering council
Way to kill of the town centres .so shortsighted .
All designed to reduce car use, until only the ‘better’ people, to include of course top councillors will have cars, and we will wobble about on silly electric scooters or taken around in driverless electric cabs.
YOUR children or Grandchildrens lives will be very different from that you knew, and most not for the better either.
Except it won’t. It will just encourage people to drive between the places they can park for free. An hour free parking in a council car park followed by 2 hours in Morrisons, an hour at M&S, and hour at Sainsburys, that’s 5 hours parking in Newport without paying a penny.
Encouraging people out of their cars needs to be more carrot than stick. Currently its all stick.
go to shanklin all the time today for lunch 2 hours free know the area.
So one minute they are trying to help the high street and the next minute they are trying to end the high street they really have no clue do they and in 6 months time when another shop closes down they will come up with some parking offer
motorists are fined for parking withut paying opposite the bowling alley in Ryde but no attempt is made to fine Ryde Taxis who are using the pay and display bays as their personal taxi rank without paying anything, up to 4 at a time every day, they don’t pay and they deprive other motorists of parking spaces.
Well well, this really shows a lack of understanding doesn’t it? Given how inaccessible some parts of the island are, personal transport is almost a must.
So let’s make it as expensive as possible to park your vehicle shall we? That will stop people using their cars and everyone will travel by train/bus/bike/ horse and cart? As with everything our council does from magic roundabouts to non floaters, there seems to be no joined up thinking? What next then? No go zones for cars? Indigestion zones for diesels? Take a look at what is going on in London and the suburbs…a lot of disruption and very bad feelings towards those in charge!
We have been through this, we have all discussed it. High parking charges put people off from stopping, no stopping = no footfall through the shops = no purchasing = no shops. Blimey, this really isn’t rocket science!!
It doesn’t put people off shopping. It puts people shopping at small town centre shops and encourages them to use out-of-town retail parks.
There are an awful lot of platinum plated pension payments to cover in the centre of non-jobbery at county hall and as usual they’ll be making the taxpayer cough up to cover it – oh and if you dare ask for services in return for this extra money, don’t be so selfish, the public sector no need to offer you anything any more cos they are all busy ‘fighting’ for diversity and battling the climate change apparently caused by you!!
Latest move by our caring? for some council to help the High Street.
As our shops close, they happily give permission to convert for residential use. Perhaps they can be used to house all those newly arrived alleged under 18s, rather than in London.
You watch in a couple of weeks they’ll be giving themselves a cost of living pay rise. At our expense
For along time my wife and I have shopped in Cowes,Gunville,Newport,Lake and East Cowes. Never paid a penny in parking. Totally refuse to put money into the councillors pockets. Sod them. Pirates in disguise.
Empty carparks equals empty high streets empty shops
Good old council screw you all the time so they can give themselves a pay rise
Have you seen the expensive fencing they are erecting along Undercliff Drive where it pases the Botanical gardens? What was wrong with replacing like with like, the original wooden fencing lasted for years.
