The Isle of Wight Council has doubled the cost of parking overnight during the summer months in a bid to cash in on tourists visiting the Island.
Over the next 3 weeks, the Council will be updating signs and ticket machine software to accommodate changes which will see overnight parking charges doubled until 31st October 2022.
The overnight charges will now be £2 between 1st April and 31st October, but will revert to £1 during the winter months between 1st November 2022 and 31st March 2023.
Prior to June 2019, residents and visitors alike did not need to pay to park after 18:00. However, the draw of an additional £147,500 of revenue led to the local authority introducing the fee almost 3 years ago, which is now expected to raise an additional £80,000 a year for the council’s coffers.
Motorists are advised to check the tariff board or ticket machine signage as these will be changed to indicate overnight charging has started.
The council is reminding residents who live within 200 metres of a pay and display car park that they can purchase a discounted permit to park there for £198 per year — which equates to around £3.80 per week.
For more information on the permit, visit www.iow.gov.uk/Residents/Transport-Parking-and-Streets/Parking-Services/Parking-Permits/Residential-Permits.
Omg you money grabbing parasites !!!!!
First the island (a tourist island!)
Is becoming a concrete jungle !!!!
Now you are intending to rip islanders and tourists off !!!
Why ??????
Oh yes you fat cats need to top up your already over inflated pension pot …..
And then the big question is will it ever go back to £1 ?????
You act surprised. This what you get in a country that has no written constitution that pretends to have a democracy but in fact does not. Over 800 ‘lords’ sit in parliament, not a single one elected.
No not surprising at all just cannot believe they think it will go back to £1 !!!@
Do they think we are idiot’s ?????.
No we have really had enough and know these parasites will ensure they are better off than us the mere cash cow’s !!!!!!! .
Leeches parasites and a few other words I cannot will not print please use your imagination!!!!!
they are short of cash but that has not stopped them from stopping all parking from the bus station to Quay road in Ryde despite the fact no work is being carried out, they have closed the coach park to store materials for the wonderful upgrade, why could this have not been done during the winter, the other day all parking was suspended along Canoe lake road also deterring visitors.
I should of read your post first my words exactly
A gentle reminder that the public have higher fuel costs, car tax going up plus outgoings which means the car maybe used less. Putting night time parking up will not necessarily get the council more revenue but get the public to use their car less and park in perhaps illegal areas at night as traffic wardens can not work day and night. Perhaps they should make it cheap so that more cars would go into the car parks, turning over more revenue as the numbers of cars would increase. Charging so much for car parking will actually effect the high streets, the hospitality businesses which the have seriously suffered from covid and higher overheads.
Good move for once from our council. We don’t want more and more tourists here too busy as it is now.
I wonder how you make your living? Il take a wild guess and say not from tourism !
If you don’t like it move. The island is a holiday destination, it always has been and always will be.
This is a holiday Island, and we rely on tourist to boost the economoy and jobs. These measures will deter tourists from coming to the Island. This council shouls wake up.
Bad news for residential parking.
I suspect the failure to return to winter rates in October is about as predictable as this doubling was.
the only surprising thing is that the £1 rate lasted so long.
It’s a misnomer to call it overnight parking. It’s a stupid evening rate which is the same whether you’re there for 30 mins or 10 hours.
I often park up in the evening for a quick stroll but won’t be doing so now – £2 is a rip off.
Should be able to get 30 mins or one hour free in the evening.
You will have to stroll for your stroll now?
So that will never change back
I don’t remember a candidate on Council called The Sheriff of Nottingham? Time to reform Robin Hood and his merry men and start taking back our hard earnt money from these modern day thieves in power!.
What do you expect from the most corrupt and un-investigated council in the UK. Perhaps the council leader can get a new doll for her collection with the proceeds.
Robbing barstards are hell bent on killing the island
This bloody council has its filthy greedy hands firmly round the throat of an already struggling island community.
The word ‘victim ‘ certainly applies to all island residents.
Narrow minded council strikes again, second homes sat empty and don’t pay anywhere near into the system that they should. Thousands of yachts, boats, cruisers swanning about the island waters without a hint of any tax or licenses paid. Come on council reach of these low hanging fruits and get radical. Or is it you don’t want to upset rich people in fear they will turn away. Then lobby central government for upper rate tax rises. Stop penny pinching from average people.
If the council wanted to serve the people and holiday makers they would create Aires like the have in Europe. But instead they take the monkey grab option
IWC = SCUM………….
Another example of our lovely council trying to drive tourists away from our island.
Why all this hysteria about a £1 increase?? What with energy bills rising so much boiling a kettle will be same soon..
We already pay enough to get to the island and now we are being penalised even more to park. Seeing as the islands main source of income is from tourism do they really want us there? People like to park in the evening to go to seafront restaurants and beach but will be put off by paying more to park and this will make the restaurants lose money if people don’t go there and go inland instead.
You want to kill the Islands tourist industry post Covid then so be it!
Wait till they start implementing residential parking everywhere which will mean if you don;t have a driveway, you will have to pay to park in your own street.
Pretty sure if you own the street there’s no much council can do to you.
But if you mean society subsidising preferential treatment to one type of objects – vehicles – to be stored in public space then I don’t get it why it should be free.
Either we agree everyone pays for road in taxes and hence allow to store whatever objects they want there for free; or if you want to keep specific items there, like cars, while others are disallowed – pay for the extra upkeep it brings and for taking away space that city could’ve use for plants and trees instead.
Why should money from my taxes and rest of society go towards making sure YOU have a free parking space? Enough with those ever-expanding free social benefits!
more charges for car owners but they are happy to ignore Ryde Taxi’s who use the pay and display bays opposite the bowling alley in Ryde as their free taxi rank with 4 or 5 using them for most of the day, the traffic wardens just ignore them but happily fine anyone else.
Seems like I’m going to go against the grain here.
£2 to park your camper van etc overnight is surely a bargain and, if you choose wisely, you get a sea view, eateries nearby and a place to wash etc in the morning. Yes, a campsite will have hookups for electricity but many people don’t need those.
Why would any local people pay to park their cars, surely we all know where we can park for free?
I don’t have much time for the Council but I think complaining about something which doesn’t affect you and which many people will see as a cheap place to park up whilst touring is just complaining for the sake of it.
Sure you can park your campervan (or any other vehicle) overnight – but you cant camp in it as this is in breach of the local bylaws. So no – it isnt cheap camping.
WTF just show’s what a bunch of money grabbing scumbags this council is.
There is a department that just thinks up new ways of keeping the council pension pots topped up.
They do what they want when they want and it will never change and they know it .
Is there a way of checking were all this money goes and are we actually getting value for our money.
Absolutely disgusting, they should be ashamed of themselves.
Public sector pensions and cushy lifestyles don’t come cheap!! Either accept their new car park charges or they’ll find another few miles of street kerbs where they can paint their double yellow pension lines to keep the coffers topped up with your cash
Just to add fuel to the fire !!!!
How much is this change over going to cost us mere cash cow’s ???????
Aren’t there local elections next month. Send a message with your choice of vote.
Though personally I wouldn’t trust postal voting with the corruption and uselessness of this awful council.
Why does this money grabbing council just not get it! High parking charges = people don’t stop = people do not spend in the shops! It therefore follows, no income = no business = no rates! Is it really the cash cow they think it is?
They’ve got to pay the continuous repair bills for the ‘non’ floating bridge!
