A traditional favourite among the agricultural community, this year’s Ploughing Match saw over 30 entrants compete and £2,000 raised for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA).
The match, a popular annual event among the agricultural community, took place on the 20th of September this year at Appleford, by kind permission of The Nunn Harvey Clarke estate. More than 30 competitors were judged on the opening, uniformity, firmness, and usability of the soil.
The point of ploughing is to prepare the land for new crops, turning the soil to produce a clean weed free seedbed. There are different classes for different tractors and types of plough, and this year’s champion was Ricky Attrill from the Match Plough class with his 1991 Ford tractor and Kverneland plough.

Besides the ploughing, visitors enjoyed crop competitions, tractor rides, numerous trade stands, a raffle and an auction. The event is organised by a voluntary committee and supported by key sponsors including BCM Wilson Hill, JR Fencing, Stubbings Bros, M R Agri and MTN Plant.
Proceeds from the match, after costs and contingencies, go to charity.
After costs and contingencies were deducted, the total presented to HIOWAA was £2,000.
A Ploughing Match spokesperson has said:
“We were very pleased to be able to present a cheque this year for £2,000 to the HIOWAA, thanks to the strong public support and local sponsorship.”
