With the Tour of Britain set to reach its climax on the Island in September, 2 new online information hubs have been created to keep residents informed about how the race may affect them.
A new Facebook Page – www.facebook.com/TourofBritainIOW – and a dedicated section of the Isle of Wight Council’s website – www.iow.gov.uk/tourofbritain – will both carry information on the race course and estimated race timings, as well as advising residents on the best ways to watch the action and enjoy the spectacle.
The sites will also explain what steps residents who live on the route need to do to keep the circuit safe for riders and spectators as race day approaches. This includes parking elsewhere.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, has said:
“The race organisers have had huge experience in staging Tour of Britain races around the country over many years and have tried and tested traffic management processes in place to ensure the event causes as little impact on the travelling public as possible.
“At the core of the event management is a ‘rolling’ road closure that halts traffic in the previous few minutes before riders pass through and then re-opens as soon as competitors pass by. You can learn more about these rolling closures via this video which is also on the new Facebook and website pages.
“For safety reasons it will also be necessary to create ‘clearways’ which will need to be free of parked cars meaning some residents and visitors without off-road parking will need to make alternative arrangements prior to the race. Details of these clearway areas are also outlined on the website and Facebook pages.
“This is an extraordinary worldwide event for the Isle of Wight, and we want to showcase the Island to a wide audience. We do ask residents and visitors to help us deliver a trouble-free race by helping to keep the roads free of parked cars during the race and road closures.”

There will be further communication with residents in the coming weeks, but the new website page and the Facebook page will be 2 ways that people can keep up to speed with the latest race information. Both sites will be updated as and when the latest information becomes available and will also tell residents where they can contact the Council if they have any comments or questions.
Separate discussions have already been held with parish and town councils and businesses on the route and these will continue.
The race goes along my road past my house – I expect Parish Council/IWC to inform me where to park/ advice etc not have to seek this by looking up myself. At least Wight Fibre/ Island Roads would drop leaflet in giving info when planning work, Again disgrimanting against those that don’t have /want to use Facebook or computers. Hope organisers are providing medical care and Ambulances as our St Mary’s can’t cope for Island residents as is.
I think you will find most islanders who live, work and relax here don’t want this at all. Ridiculous idea from the outset. I hope people who live here will ignore road blockages set up to allow these lycra louts to take over the island and will stop people from going out on what would be there only day off from work. “rolling road closures” there will be a lot of very angry residents here that day for sure. And if I chose to park my car outside my property, I would not move it for this event, it’s my right.
It wont stop anyone, it’s a brief period on one day, one day of 365 in a year. My goodness, is this what a snowflake is?
