Residents of Old Charlton House in Cowes have taken to the water for the first of their Summer sailing trips, thanks to the support of local charities Wetwheels and Cowes Sailability.
The charities, both dedicated to providing opportunities for disabled and elderly people to experience life at sea, organised a special outing that saw residents enjoy spectacular views and the thrill of open water. Volunteers gave up their time to ensure the residents could share in the joy of sailing.
For some, the trip was a chance to relive fond memories. Joy, a former secretary at Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club who once worked for legendary boat designer Uffa Fox, immediately recognised the club where the boat was moored and reminisced about her younger sailing days.
The group enjoyed a gentle cruise down the River Medina before the powered catamaran picked up speed, taking them out to sea and along to Osborne Bay under glorious sunshine.
Jim, a retired merchant naval officer, soaked up every moment, saying:
“That was amazing, I loved every second.”
Activities Coordinator Debbie Webb has said:
“We are so lucky to be able to offer these experiences to our residents, and thank both Sailability and Wetwheels for supporting us. The joy it gives to our residents is absolutely wonderful, and we love seeing their smiles.”

A second sailing trip is planned for August, giving more residents the chance to enjoy this memorable experience.
