A new not-for-profit improvised comedy group is set to launch at the Ventnor Exchange in April, welcoming people who are keen to try something new.
‘Up Your Improv’ inspires people to think differently, act quickly and say what they see.
Through a series of 6 workshops, this new group aims to create a collective of people who are interested in learning and performing improvised comedy.
The funds raised from each session will go back into the group to pay other teachers to lead workshops, supporting the development of practitioners at the event.
Lewis Wheeler, who will be leading the workshops said:
“Improvised comedy is a great way to build confidence, form trust and gain experience thinking on your feet. The workshop encourages those new to improv lto earn new skills and those familiar with the form enjoying an exciting refresher.
“The initial drop-in workshop is a good way to learn the fundamentals of improvised comedy with the six-week course giving people the opportunity to build confidence with short form improvised pieces. Those who start the course will go step-by-step through the process to ace the art of acting in the moment.”
The initial class launches with a drop-in session on Thursday 20th April from 19:00 – 20:30 with the full 6-session course beginning on Thursday 27th April every fortnight.
Jack Whitewood, co-founder of Ventnor Exchange said:
“We’re thrilled to support this new group at the Ventnor Exchange, encouraging collaboration among the Island community. Improv is a great way to communicate and be creative in a very different way to something that is scripted.
“This new course gives those interested an opportunity to try something different and experience a new way of thinking, collaborating collectively on short and long form scenes. Alongside our successful spoken word collective, Up Your Improv is an exciting new group, which is part of a growing list of activities at the Exchange.”
While the classes are part of an initial 6-week course, it is hoped that a new group will form from them, creating the opportunity to host regular drop-in sessions at the Exchange. Further classes are planned alongside weekend workshops with local and national teachers.
The initial drop-in workshop is £6.50. Those unable to commit to 6 weeks of sessions can pay and go per session when they want.
