A coroner has concluded that a man found dead at his 5-bedroom home in Newport shortly after Police contact back in 2023 took his own life, with no concerns raised during a subsequent standards review.
62-year-old John Stephen Eastwood was discovered at his home address of 59 Staplers Road on the morning of 3rd January 2023.
Officers and detectives spent several hours at the property, with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary referring the matter to its Professional Standards Department due to earlier contact with Mr Eastwood. That referral was subject to a mandatory review by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Now, an inquest into Mr Eastwood’s death, conducted in writing by Senior Isle of Wight Coroner Caroline Sumeray, has recorded a conclusion of suicide. The cause of death was confirmed as hanging.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed:
“Following a mandatory review, no concerns were raised by the IOPC or by our Professional Standards Department.”
It remains unknown whether Mr Eastwood’s actions were in direct connection with his ‘contact’ with Police.
Mr Eastwood’s property, which was in a poor state of repair, was sold at auction and has subsequently undergone a major refurbishment.

Why does it matter how many bedrooms he had!!! Very strange reporting
