Island Line trains will not be operating at all today (Wednesday) as a result of a nationwide strike by members of the ASLEF union.
Train drivers are once again walking out in a continuing row over pay. As a result, South Western Railway’s operations across the network are affected.
No trains are operating between Ryde and Shanklin today, with reduced services on the mainland – notable for those travelling around the South or to London Waterloo.
Tomorrow (Thursday) there is a ban on overtime, however, South Western Railway say they expect to run a normal service.
Further strikes are planned for Friday but Island Line will be running a normal service.
The message from the rail operator is to check before you travel.
Island Line train drivers voting for strike action sounds very much like the old idiom, turkeys voting for Christmas.
Train drivers on 50k – 60k per annum demanding even more money when the line is very probably financially unviable just seems like madness, or terribly short-sighted.
But, I doubt if those drivers will honestly care if there’s no railway here in 5 or 10 years time.
Imagine driving a train up and down the Island Line back and forth all day with not a care in the world for £60k per annum. No other trains to bother you or level crossings. Could do it with your eyes closed and minimal training. Easy money but they still want more. Get a grip.
And they don’t earn that much and the dispute is not all about money. Learn the facts first.

The railways are run by private companies not the department of transport. The year is 2023 not 1973!

mid £40’s for the IOW drivers. Ever tried driving a train? or tried the entry assesments? you need to do 9 assesments before even getting near an interview and if the depot manager don’t like you at that point you are out and because of safety you only get one more go and if you fail again you can never apply to be a train driver again. Plus if you do get through your training is around 24 months long

Stop reading the daily mail and learn to think for yourself, go talk to them to find out why. In the 80’s when I was on strike at the post office the press was saying we were on £200pw, the reality was more like £80pw.
Sack the lot of them.
They better not lock their push bikes up, will be arrested, assaulted and locked up for 24 hours. Think you live in a democracy? Think again.
If teachers can have inset days, why not train drivers?

The strikes are not all about pay, they also include working practices which can effect anyone that uses trains including staffing levels that are there to protect the public.
