UPDATED: Firefighters are attending a serious road traffic collision between a motorcycle and car on the outskirts of Shanklin this evening (Sunday) in which one person has died.
Crews from Newport and Shanklin are in attendance at Cowleaze Hill between Shanklin and Ventnor alongside several paramedics and Police.
An air ambulance has been called to the scene and has landed nearby with onboard paramedics and a doctor.
Emergency services were called to the scene at just gone 17:00.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area. The road has been closed in both directions and is likely to remain closed for some time.
UPDATE @ 17:45 – A hard road closure has been requested by Police, indicating the seriousness of the incident. Island Roads crews are en-route to implement closures at Victoria Avenue junction with High Street, Shanklin and Leeson Road, Ventnor.

UPDATE @ 18:10 – One person, a male motor
clist, has died in this evening’s collision involving a motorcycle and a car, Island Echo can reveal.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was called to the scene, but sadly the life of the rider could not be saved following the head-on collision.
Collision Investigation officers from the mainland are en-route to Shanklin as an investigation into the fatal crash gets underway.
The road will remain closed for at least 5 hours and most likely into the early hours of Monday.
UPDATE @ 23:22 – Island Echo can reveal that the biker was travelling from Ventnor towards Shanklin when, on a left-hand corner, it is understood he crossed over into the path of an oncoming white car before colliding head-on with the front of the vehicle.
The incident occurred on the Bonchurch Road section of the A3055 (pictured left). At least two other motorcyclists were riding behind the casualty at the time.
Investigations into the fatal collision continue.
Hampshire Constabulary are yet to provide a comment.
UPDATE @ 00:15 – The road has now re-opened to traffic in both directions.
