A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of knocking out an elderly gentleman in his 80s, in what has been described by Police as a shocking and unprovoked attack.
This afternoon (Sunday), Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary issued an appeal for information in relation to a serious assault that occurred on Cross Lane, Newport on Friday.
It’s claimed that the elderly gentleman was crossing over the road from School Lane when a motorcycle approached at speed from the Coppins Bridge direction. The elderly male gestured for the motorcyclist to slow down, believing the vehicle was travelling at speeds in excess of 60mph in a 30mph zone.
It is alleged that the motorcyclist parked up and punched the 82-year-old in the face with such force that it knocked him unconscious. He fell to the floor and sustained injuries to his face, elbow and hand, including bruising and swelling.
The perpetrator fled the scene, leaving the injured gentleman on the pavement. The victim’s family say he was ‘left for dead’.
Just hours after appealing for information, including CCTV and dashcam footage, an arrest has now been made.
Police have confirmed that a 42-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He remains in custody at Newport Police Station at this time.
Questioning of the suspect is underway, with further updates expected from Police on Monday afternoon.
I hope the gentleman is going to be ok? What absolutely disgusting behaviour, he better get sent to prison piece of s…! I hope we get to know who it is, so neighbours etc know exactly who they are living near???
too right
see so many people driving at speed and when members of the public ask them to slow down or signal it they get full on abuse.
if you don’t like being told to slow down DONT SPEED
We need more traffic Police on the island
and London style speed camera’s.
If we stop uneducated B’stards speeding
then such incidents wouldn’t have happened.
You know there is a problem when it takes an
82 year old man to tell someone to slow down.
I keep stating there are speeding problems on the island
UNEDUCATED NUMPTY’S THINK THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH
SPEEDING.
I pray the elderly man is ok, and if law does exist on the island
they bang him up.
What would happen if they done this to Royalty, bet he wouldn’t
just get a slap on the wrist then.
Needs banging up.
That was fast, name him. He should not be bailed either. Well done the police. If he is bailed and his name released he had better watch out that’s for sure.
I keep saying speeding is rife on the island
BUT NO ONE LISTENS
Hopefully next time he is speeding an elderly lamp post or tree gestures him to slow down. Gutless piece of scum, should be jailed for GBH and banned from driving for life
That only happens in countries like Dubai where
real law and order exists.
[…] NEWPORT MAN ARRESTED OVER VIOLENT ATTACK ON ELDERLY MALE […]
I do hope that the elderly gentleman recovers ok. it’s definitely not ok to attack anyone no matter how annoyed you get.
But to leave someone unconscious that’s just dam right nasty.
lock him up
I would love just 5 minutes in a room with this pure scum i would break every bone in his filthy body, a poor man in his 80s bless him I really hope he is OK this sort of news makes me sick to the core.
.
He needs to be named that’s for sure,
if the courts don’t do there job I no 100% me and 5 of my close friends will do the job you can count on that
Robert Peel would be turning in his grave
what is happening in the UK thesedays.
I bet you drink carling black label
or eat 3 shredded wheat for breakfast.
Lol
What has happened to this island it has b ecome full of utter disgusting scum
Yes, the Island has become a dumping ground for nonces, drug dealers, low life and feral brats
The island is full of uneducated backward scum
probably a Reformer!
I keep stating there is a speeding problem on the island
YET NO ONE BELIEVES IT!
This nasty piece of work needs banging up, he should
respect his elders, who can carry out such an act
on an elderly person.
I hope they throw the book at him, uneducated scum like
this makes me sick.
“I keep stating there is a speeding problem on the island
YET NO ONE BELIEVES IT!”
I think anyone who has, in the last few years, read the comments on Island Echo, knows that you think there is a speeding problem, on the Island..
but contrary to your statemet above, I think many of them DO belive the same,…
However, your persistant calls for solutions that are totally rediculous (like a blanket 20mph speed limit [no, 20 is not plenty, except in specific locations]), or totally un-realsitic from a cost perspective (like speed cameras every 100m , on every road), or just plain dangerous (like speed humps on bends on the military road),… make people treat your comments with the compempt they deserve.
In this sad case, although speeding was the initial cause of the interaction between the totally innocent elderly gentleman, and the scum-bag on the motor bike,.. if it has just ended there,.. we would never have known about it…
It is that fact that this delinquent moron decided to take revenge for being asked to slow down, and beat the gentleman unconscious, and leave him for dead, that is the issue here,.. On that, I agree that he should be dealt the most severe punishment possible…
Although in general I am a believer in Law & Order, and the use of the criminal justice system,…In this case I feel that perhaps a ‘vigilante’ approach might be more successful to prevent any re-occurance. and perhaps deter similar actions from similar minded individuals.
(e.g. if the Scumbag were altered in a way that physically prevented him from repeating the offence, he wouldn’t do it again)
I saw a Numpty woman in a van today nr
Thompsons garden centre nearly smash
head on into an on coming car.
The van was careering on the wrong side of the
road.
The van driver took her eye off the road
by waving to another motorist coming out
of a side road.
Too many motorists lack concentration and are
not focused on their driving.
Anybody got the date of his appearance in court?
Absolutely sickening! Unfortunately, there are many of these selfish, aggressive types on this island. They can’t take any form of criticism without getting angry and then reverting to violence. I see cars/vans driving at 60mph down Carisbrooke High Street in the early morning. God only knows what speed they do on the country roads. It’s why so many end up in fields or a ditch. I hope the elderly man recovers soon and the motorcyclist ends up in prison. I won’t hold my breath!
There needs to be STRICT speeding rules on the island.
Try driving above 20mph in Pompey
Pompey have rules, Isle of Wight doesn’t!
I see he has been bailed. But NOT named. Why can we not leave comments on the latest news about this.
