Only those nearing the end of their life, child inpatients, and those giving birth will be allowed to receive visitors at St Mary’s Hospital, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust has confirmed.
Enhanced visiting restrictions are now in place across all inpatient wards at St Mary’s Hospital.
The decision to restrict visiting across the site is not one that the Trust has taken lightly but due to the continuing rise in COVID-19 patients being treated at the hospital, it says it must put the safety of our patients and staff first.
There are some exceptions to these restrictions where one family member is permitted to visit, these are:
- a patient that is nearing end of life
- a child who is an inpatient on the Children’s Ward
- a birthing partner to the Labour Ward
Visiting for the above exceptions should be agreed with the appropriate Ward Sister and proof of a negative lateral flow test will be expected.
The hospital says that because it understands how important it is for the welfare of our patients to stay connected with friends and family whilst in hospital, it is continuing to offer its message to a loved one service.
To use this service, send a message to the Patient Experience Team at: [email protected] who will make sure your message reaches them.
If you are attending the hospital for an outpatient appointment, then you are reminded to attend alone unless in exceptional circumstances, in which case one carer is permitted. Friendly marshals remain at the front entrances to ensure the reason for your visit is valid and will request to see your appointment letter.
On entry to hospital buildings, you are required to wear a face-covering and continue to adhere to social distancing, and use the hand sanitiser provided. If you arrive early, then you are asked to wait outside until it is time for your appointment. If you are exempt from wearing a face covering, then you are required to wear a face visor as an alternative.
The Trust says:
“Our visiting policy remains under continuous review. As soon as we feel it is safe to relax measures once more, we will look forward to welcoming visitors back to the hospital. In the meantime, we ask people for their understanding and support as we continue to take all necessary precautions to keep everybody safe.”

They should definitely make it compulsory to have to wear masks in shops and on public transport. So many people being ignorant and just don’t care and there is not much news about this. Are the government trying to hush things up? Even without covid, why should people have to expect to get other people’s germs? So it makes sense to wear face covering on buses or in shops and anywhere where people are in indoor spaces. Why is this so difficult for some people to do?
The Gov are doing as they did last year, keeping the issues as low key as feasible UNTIL the hol season (when the kids go back to school) is over.
That way they have maxed income from staycations, and again the restrictions will come thick and fast within a few weeks now. Then, again, near Christmas those restrictions will be lifted, to allow the tills to ping again, then, after new year, more lockdowns.
The truth is being supressed to stop panic and collapse of finance which we ALL need to stay intact.
This is being a news item, but it has been like this for ages. My Mum was in the short stay ward during July and again in August, neither time was I allowed to visit nor did I expect to .As far as I was aware the restrictions hadn’t been lifted from the lockdown.
I don’t blame them at all .
We should all be aware of hands face space fresh air ….
We don’t need those who look after patients getting ill ,otherwise who will be there for us ?
And not just covid…cancer …a and e ….
Etc etc.
They have been at the very forefront of covid and don’t need to keep testing visitors or cleaning up after every visit.
“Almost 5,000 Covid cases linked to Boardmasters festival in Cornwall” – source ITN News – Monday 23 August 2021, 5:18pm……. We’re next with the IOW Festival. Good luck St.Marys and older folk who had the jabs at he start of the year. Should be pulled, but of course there is money or ‘mental well-being’ at stake.. SMH
Absolutely agree with you Mr Tidy every effort was made to make sure people did not attend Broadmaster Festival if they were a risk but it did not work there so why do the IOW Council think it will work here. We are already seeing the numbers increasing on the Island especially after Cowes Week. I love the festival but will not be going now but that will not mean I will stay safe as it spreads throughout our population after the festival.
I get so fed up of hearing the excuse of ‘mental health’ suffers if there are lockdowns, mine improved under lockdown, as did many peoples who prefer a quieter life. If our society were not geared so much towards what noisy extroverts wanted, and was more balanced in favour of quieter people, it would be much less stressful for many of us who have to suffer because of how ‘normal’ society is.
I can understand it. I’ve seen it with my older brother who has lost everything he has been working so hard for. Completely destroyed. Having to comfort my mum who was crying because of the depression he is now battling every day.
Millions of people round the world have suffered the same – jobs, careers, futures, dreams, hopes, years and years of hard work – all destroyed.
It’s a mystery isn’t it, why these people may be suffering mentally because of this.
I’m so very sorry you’re fed up with hearing people who are desperately trying to save their lives and futures moaning about the vicious psychological warfare / fear campaign waged upon them by the vile and disgusting mainsteam media for the last year and a half that has totally ruined their lives and happiness and left them mentally and psychologically broken.
Seems like some of these people have never experienced any hardship before and as soon as something comes along that impacts on their formerly cosy way of life they can’t cope with it and those of us who have suffered for years are supposed to feel sorry for them, when they have never had any sympathy for us. Depression & anxiety has been a way of life for me for years because of how society is, but it improved dramatically when the first lockdown happened. I got a tiny glimpse of how life could be, how better it was to hear the birds sing instead of constant traffic noise and people shouting in the street. Now anxiety levels are through the roof again as life is back to ‘normal’, But no, the noisy extroverts are the only ones who count for anything. Selfish beyond belief.
fact covid is not going any where on will it we have to live with it ,there is nothing wrong with us having a festival or any thing else on our island these people commenting are just against the festival or anything that happens on this island we have to live with this just like the flu . do you people not go out or travel anywhere .if you want to wear a mask like me sometimes that’s fine but lets get on with are lives because nothing will change its a fact
But the festival will still go ahead with thousands attending?! Absolute madness and so frustrating for those who can’t visit loved ones. This government needs to make their minds up.
But without a letter you are left telling the security guard (they are Security Guards you have on duty St Marys, NOT marshals’) and anyone within earshot that you are there to visit the sexual health clinic. Very professional – NOT!
What difference does it make, Marshall’s or security guards, they are there to do a job.
Someone with a large salary and a big office space should be addressing that issue. The letters GDPR (UK) should encourage.
This is the responsible and correct thing to do. It is a hospital with sick, weak and vulnerable people in it. Too many people now, in my opinion, have become complacent with COVID spread and infection. Well done St Mary’s.
Scooter Rally and the festival will make us the hotspot for the entire UK. Where’s sausage Bobs view on this then ??
I have an email from ‘Bob’ saying he’s all in favour of the festival going ahead. Unbelievable!
so sad some comments on here, life needs to move forward and metal health can only improve this way ,people move around and always will, we have to live with covid as we do with every thing else its not going any where I’m afraid
It’s funny how it’s only the ‘mental health’ of certain types of people who count for anything. Some of us have had to suffer in silence for years because of the type of people who now say their mental health will suffer if they can’t do exactly what they want.
We’re already the hotspot for the UK. Check the figures.
Mask wearing in Supermarkets seems right out of favour at the moment and given the increase in cases going on i anticipate the upcoming festival making this making it whole lot worse. Sorry, but, Hands, Face, Space for me.
Many will die just so a few selfish can get wated with other tattooed chavy low life for three days. Gov needs to ban festivals until cases are very low.
Not many people wearing them on the buses either!
I must say, i did read a report that medical masks only gave 4 hour protection and fashion masks did nothing (people wear medical ones for weeks and ive seen some that have turned to fluff). Covid areas in hospitals wear full face fitting masks and p3 style ones, why?? if these masks everyone wears out in public are doing such a great job?? I would imagine the government are making a mint with friends close to them owning contracts to supply these face pants which do nothing to stop the virus…..
most of you commenters on here are likely jabbed sheep anyway so why you moaning.your ok apart.ip too choice with a mask…there making there own risk assessment…any one who still fears….wear one .simple.
I personally am at risk but I’m not living in fear fgs.like gov want us too with the FEARMONGERING.be sensible thats all
flue is no different…people will always catch it …always die from it and maybe even get bit sick from it.
that is life no more no less
Try and string a bunch of words together and make a sentence…
yes totally agree think most of these people who have commented are living in a bubble or something. covid is not going away we just have to live with it and be sensible you can all wear a mask and wash your hand if you want to simples
Well done, you just showed everyone how selfish you are. It takes no effort at all to put a mask on and protect yourself and others around you. As for fear mongering, tell that to the 132,000 families that lost someone to covid. Over the last 18 month period that is 182 families every day to covid. But all it takes to ware a mask and the infection will drop.
“There are too many people in the world, the world is overpopulated!,” shout the mainstream media.
“Having children is one of the most destructive things you can do to the environment, say researchers” – The Independent.
“Is having a baby in 2021 pure environmental vandalism?” – Vogue.
“Science proves kids are bad for earth. Morality suggests we stop having them” – nbcnews.
“Would you give up having children to save the planet? – The Guardian
But we must vaccinate every man, woman and child on the planet as we care so very, very much about you billions of “useless eaters” and want to keep you all safe and well.
Oh, and we must take a moment to thank ISIS.
Pre-Covid world they were the biggest threat to humanity, with cells spread across the West in every nation and major city, with bombs and attacks on airports, ferries, sports and music arenas, shopping centres, etc., etc., imminent.
Every night on the news – FEAR, FEAR, FEAR!!!
But now these cells have completely vanished! Where have they been for the last eighteen months or so???
But then that’s perfect isn’t it, as they don’t want any distractions from the big 24/7 Covid fear campaign for the last year and half do they.
I wonder when people will realise who the real terrorists are.
you don’t have to watch the news do you
I don’t.
But I’m aware of what’s going on around me, and my Dad is completely brainwashed by the news. Every single day, without fail, it’s Meridian Tonight at 6, followed by the ITN 6:30 news, and then the Channel 4 News from 7 to 8. And Sky News inbetween and his head buried in the Daily Express for an hour or two.
Every time we get a “Terror-Threat Raised to Severe” headline every four or five months or so, he 100% believes it. Of course nothing happens as there or no terrorists and it’s just to keep the fear level high, but he buys it hook, line and sinker, saying “all those evil muslim terrorists, they’re everywhere and it’s true because the news / television said so!”
And I hear him outside the front of our house talking to neighbours and other people, saying “did you see the news last night, did you see the news last night??” And of course they all watch the news every day and believe everything they’re told.
The mainstream news has been repeating for months these pathetic little labels, like “covidiot,” “covid-denier,” “science-denier,” anti-vaxxer,” etc., etc. And surprise surprise, the mind-controlled masses just go round repeating the labels.
And look at the clapping in spring 2020. What was it, at 8 p.m., all the neighbours going out to their front gates and smashing saucapans together like a demented seal slapping its flippers together.
How’s that for brilliant mind-control!
So it doesn’t matter if you don’t watch the news. You’re still surrounded by brainwashed news worshippers every day.
