As part of a bid to restore the public’s trust in Policing, a list of named ‘local bobbies’ has been published by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, giving Islanders a direct point of contact should issues arise in their neighbourhood. In February last year, Police & Crime Commissioner Donna Jones announced she would increase police visibility and restore public confidence by bringing back named Local Bobbies for every community. Now, the force has published a list of 99 officers that have been assigned to communities across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Local residents can now contact their named Bobbie directly via phone and email, in a move which will hopefully strengthen community-police relations – something which has been lost in recent years. Analysis of the list by Island Echo shows that although there are 39 different communities for the Isle of Wight, only 8 different officers are covering the entire Island under the scheme. As an example, PC Gunter covers Seaview, Nettlestone, Godshill, Wroxall, Whitwell, Niton, Chale, Freshwater, Totland and the rest of the West Wight. Meanwhile, PC Carey and PC Trickey jointly cover Brading, St Helens, Bembridge, Lake, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor – all different areas with different needs and levels of crime. The full list of local bobbies named can be found below (correct as of 17th January):

The Local Bobbies are a part of a much larger local policing offer. They are in addition to Neighbourhood Policing Teams, Neighbourhood Enforcement Teams, District Police Teams (response officers), Missing Locate Teams, Priority Crime Teams and local investigation teams. Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has said:
“As your Police and Crime Commissioner I have been continually listening, learning and talking to thousands of people about the police service they receive. Their perceptions and feedback meant I was convinced very quickly that bringing back local named police officers to serve you and your communities was the right thing to do. “Ensuring the public know who their Local Bobby is and how to get hold of them is vital. This new scheme will ensure people know who to contact about safety and crime concerns, it will also provide ample opportunities for the community to share information and intelligence easily, ultimately helping the police to police more effectively. “This is a really exciting time for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. The force has 650 more officers than it did three years ago. It will soon have 10 more police stations open to the public, and now each community will have a dedicated local police contact; their Local Bobby. This, together with the Chief Constable’s new operating model, is a seismic shift in service delivery. “I will continue to lead the fight against crime by working closely with the Chief Constable and our partners to make sure you get the policing service you deserve.”
Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has said:
“I’m delighted that local bobbies have returned to Isle of Wight communities. I would like to thank our Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones for listening and responding to what we asked for – all part of getting a better deal for the Island. “It’s important that police officers understand what’s happening in their neighbourhood areas and make themselves accessible to the public. “Islanders want to see them, and they want to be able to talk to them about things they see and hear in their areas. This is a big step forward in striving to make our streets and communities safer. “I’ll be meeting with the new officers soon to talk to them about the issues residents have raised directly with me”.

It’s just the same few names for all areas.
So,all of west wight has one rozzer!
thats progress,not.
Is this a joke ? Will each PC have a rapid response e-bike to get to the scenes of crime as well.. the thugs would be gone before plod got their cycle clips on …
Is this all the PCC can do for the island It’s a joke right ??
More lies and bs from the useless PCC. I do not call an office with no police officers in it, that is only open 3 hours a day, a police station. Nor do we have as many “new” officers that she claims when half of them were simply swapped from different units that they were already in. What a dreadful liar she is.
They seem to have named the entire Island-based force. Poor guys can now look forward to tirades of abuse and time-wasting on their phones.
That is your weekend planned then Helen.
Why none for Binstead?
Because Binstead is the Bronx of Ryde. Everyone knows it is a lawless no-go zone.
All the more reason to have one then!
Blimey a bit early for April fools isn’t it.
“bid to restore the public’s trust in Policing”
Surely the best thing would be to actually investigate real crimes such as burglaries, and not just drive around mob handed.
Drive around mob handed? There’s barely enough wooden tops on the island to make a pair, let alone a mob. How about monitored 24/7 CCTV for a start
The same Police Officers have to cover a wide area. Sounds good in theory let’s see if it works in practice! Probably not.
Not sure if it’s a good idea giving out mobile phone numbers, can’t help thinking a lot of ‘time wasting’ will occur. Some sados will get their kicks wasting Police time.
Not sure how they translated fully reopen local police stations, engage in the community and actually turn up to crimes into “provide a list of named people to tell people they’re not going to turn out” but they could have saved us a lot of pointless reading by just saying:
Binstead & Fishbourne Nobody
Central Wight PC Georgia Blanchard and PC Liz Clapp
Ryde and Havenstreet PC Greg Rogers and PC Henry Trotman
East Wight PC James Carey and PC Kerry Trickey
Cowes and Wootton Bridge PC Matthew Rowlands
Everywhere else PC Eva Gunter
About as useful as the token gesture of opening a police station in Cowes for a couple of hours a week in the middle of the day.
Well, Mark all I can say to them is good luck, with the coverage they have and all named along with their Mobile numbers.
Don’t think this will work too well.
Ngl, if I was one of these officers, id just keep my phone on voicemail lmao
‘As an example, PC Gunter covers Seaview, Nettlestone, Godshill, Wroxall, Whitwell, Niton, Chale, Freshwater, Totland and the rest of the West Wight. Seaview and Nettlestone are not part of local community of Chale and Whitwell, also Niton and Whitwell are 18miles from Totland. This officer will never get anything done as will be traveling 100s miles back and forth, attending Parish Council meetings and on phone. Village on mainland where my sister lives ,has a police office open 10-4pm w/days in Community centre a Police officer and 2 PCSOs so always at least one on duty, village population approx 10,000. They have got to know many . Yet this officer on his own around 50,000 spread out miles apart.
this is not new ive had eva gunters details for 3 years , didnt actually realise how big an area she was covering , so i think shes brilliant
She wasn’t until now
How much extra Council Tax is this going to cost us all
in April.
People Don’t Trust the Police Anymore and Who Can Blame them?
Seems to be more politicians than operational officers.God help us
I can’t help feeling this press release is a complete cock up as it makes no sense? If it’s true it really worries me that so few police officers have responsibility for all the isses in these wards, especially PC Gunter! If not this equally worries me at the lack of due diligence by the person who released this news article. I bet Donna Jones is reaching for her Galaxy bars in frustration.
Your AI police avatar will be named …..
I have an idea let us do the work for them ……
