The new children’s emergency department at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport has opened to the public. The new paediatric emergency department benefits from a new resus and majors area, dedicated waiting area and ambulance entrance. Its opening marks the end of the first phase of works of the £12.2million emergency care floor build. The overall programme of work will see the co-location of the Island’s existing emergency department, urgent treatment centre and short stay facilities. It won’t be until the remaining phases of the new emergency floor are complete that the full benefits of the new paediatric area will be fully realised. The new waiting room has much more natural lighting and is decorated with graphic murals by the same illustrator who has designed the new artwork in the children’s ward – so familiarity is maintained during their stay, should they need to be admitted onto the ward.
Joe Smyth, Chief Officer at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust, has said:
“The improvements to our emergency care floor will mean patients will have a much better experience. This is an exciting first step and patients will see a number of benefits. However, the remaining phases of work will bring some operational difficulties as the main department will at times be reduced to facilitate the development of more integrated emergency services at the front of the hospital. “We would like to thank our island community for their patience as our multi-million investment programme continues.”
Children and their parents will need to use the new emergency department entrance if they are visiting the children’s emergency department. Adults will need to continue to access the emergency department and urgent treatment centre through the urgent treatment centre reception. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxO36H6ijuw

Just need a bigger hospital now whith more doctors and nurses..
And funding. You forgot funding.
Also ones that know what they are doing, we seem to have all the
rejects on the island.
And I’m sure you want to pay more tax and less cash in hand to facilitate your wishes.
No, we’d like less money paid into the pockets of the PFI contractors. If it wasn’t for them, the tax we already pay would more than cover costs.
MORE, most of them lefty lot don’t pay any, just take from the pot, hence happy for others to pay for what FREE contraception should have meant there is no ‘need’ for them to do so.
IF you are in poverty, don’t selfishly inflict it onto your own children, get a job, and use free contraception until YOU not others can afford to fund YOUR choice.
If people stopped moving over we wouldn’t have the problem of not enough staff!
We still would, medics are leaving in droves and vacancies can’t be filled. It’s not to do with too many people to treat it’s the money ‘pot’ which has to go two ways. Firstly it pays the loan (PFI contract) and whatever is left to staff and services. Loan payments get bigger every time there is a shiny new building leaving less money elsewhere. The PFI contract holders take a large cut of profit which, had there been no contract initially the extra money would have gone back into staffing and services. It’s called defunding. It was deliberate for private profit.
Just need fewer people floating into the UK, then we would need less homes for those displaced by such, many of the displaced understandably then come here to add to our housing issues.
So just because we, thankfully, have fewer direct illegals here, don’t think that such aren’t effecting us on the Island because they ARE.
See the reason for much of the UK’s ills now, and it won’t be caused by Gammons or Swivel Eyes, as they only point out where the real issues are.
Or do YOU think housing problems, NHS issues, crime, overcrowding on motorways, once gone diseases in the UK are just ‘coincidence’ since such graced our shores en-masse?
THINK again please.
Spot on karen. I expect your name stealing odd person will be on to disagree as likely has some skeletons of its own imo, and likely not Caucasian perhaps.
Utter codswallop. Get an education.
Is the manhole in the middle of the floor just for decoration or is it actually in use , hope the drains don’t get blocked again ,and again as this will shut the waiting area while the blockage is dealt with Mmmm couldn’t it of been sighted outside or somewhere less Intrusive
Excuse me! That is no longer a manhole it is whatever it is identifying as today. Possibly it is a person hole but then again it may be a worm hole. Sussed it, it really is a wormhole and if you jump down it you’ll enter a world where all this is really a dream.
Ooopps, sorry, I must have joined the wrong queue at the hospital, Matron, where are my meds….
That is an Inspection cover a man hole cover is found in the underwear department !
