The National Coastwatch Institution is to man the Coastguard lookout at Bembridge this Summer in a trial collaboration with HM Coastguard and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team.
Volunteers from the Needles NCI station are set to take up position on the East coast of the Island to keep a watchful eye over the infamous Bembridge Ledge.
Watchkeepers will be positioned at Bembridge Coastguard Station at the end of Beachfield Road, Forelands on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays – plus Bank Holidays – between 1st April and 23rd September 2022.
It is hoped that the trial will prove successful to help determine future initiatives between the Coastguard and National Coastwatch Institution. The 2 organisations are independent of one another but both act in the interests of the safety of mariners and those at the coast around the UK.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team will remain operational as normal, responding to a variety of emergencies across the Isle of Wight alongside flank stations at Ventnor and The Needles.
