A Freshwater man has received 4 penalty points on his licence after being caught doing just 82mph in a 70mph limit whilst travelling on the M5 motorway.
Alan Woodrow, 46, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (7th April) where he pleaded guilty to travelling over the speed limit on the M5 in Gloucestershire.
The defendant told the court he was travelling along the section of the motorway on his way to work as a motor trader at 07:56 on 25th June 2024, nearly 2 years ago, when he was caught by a speed camera.
Woodrow told the court:
“I do not argue it, I was speeding up the motorway.
“I am the only driver of this vehicle. I just never want to hear of this speeding offence ever again, I don’t want this to happen again.”
The court heard that the defendant already had 3 points on his licence relating to an offence that took place in 2023.
Woodrow was fined £370 and received an additional 4 penalty points to his licence.

Just 80mph
Lol
12mph over the limit, well deserved.
Because motorists get away with speeding on the island
at least the mainland are on the ball and catch speeders.
Well done Gloucestershire.
Ijiot
Don’t be a Numpty all your life!
That’s how the government steels from people Shall we stop driving at all?Absurd speed limit has been in place for decades to create congestion and allow idiots to obstruct middle and left lane
Dummy!
Stick to the speed limit then you have nothing
extra to pay.
Simple isn’t it!
Are we now a country that has laws but don’t enforce those that some of the public feel are unpopular? That sets a very dangerous precedent. If people don’t want the ‘government’ to ‘steel’ from people, don’t speed. It’s simple.
I’d rather see somebody driving at 80mph with the proper distance kept Infront of them, than 70mph tail gaiting. Vehicles are far superior than they used to be when the 70mph limit was introduced, brakes and automatic emergency braking systems make collisions far less likely, but what causes the most problems is people not leaving enough distance, irrespective of speed. If he was doing 82mph on an empty stretch of motorway I hardly see it as a justification to punish him for the next 4 years with higher premiums. Our points system in the UK is extremely harsh. Other places just give financial penalties, our points system can have you lose your licence very easily.
Agreed
A Numpty agreeing with another Numpty
Bless you both.
Rules are Rules, stick to the rules.
well said, all about money
You need to get out more.
Always am out in my EV, beats paying for fuel.
Bellend
Get a life cars nowadays are not the same, better braking and introducing the same as Germany has resulted in less accidents fact !.
Stick to the limit, so many numpties want to
speed.
Take a day out at Brands Hatch if you want to
speed.
You live in cloud cookcoo land
I respect the law unlike many Numpties
It will no doubt upset you to learn I’ve done 200mph in a car, on the public highway.
That should get your panties in a bind
Huge fuss about nothing. The police are going to have to be honest and start wearing bandit masks.
Why is this even reported as news?
I’m sure he’s not the only driver caught speeding on the M5.
It’s not intended to be news. it’s propaganda warning us to behave and not speed even by 12mph in case we end up like the guy in the article.
simple… nothing else to report
Ooh speeding more money for greedy government!
Always sorry after they are caught
Hardly a great speed most travel at that speed normally..
They do on the island and get away with it.
Tougher rules on the mainland
Remember 20mph is plenty
Including police cars with no flashing blue lights !
Very true but speeding is speeding
Exact 80 used to be the standard cruising speed the limit should be raised really it’s very outdated
70 mph is a safe way to drive on a Motorway to avoid collisions.Fot taxi services, try cabhit
100%
Absolute nonsense, clearly NOT in the public interest to prosecute. He was just making up time for all the smart motorway 60mph 50mph nonsense. Averages out
Seems excessive to me. I’ve always experienced motorists traveling at 80 or so whenever I’ve been on motorways on the mainland and I seem to remember there was an attempt to raise the speed limit on motorways to 80 a couple of years ago. Modern cars are well able to travel at that speed on suitable roads – I suppose it’s all down to whether drivers are up to it.
I agree! 80mph is the way forward. I see it often on my way to and from work each day and they all seem to be driving very safely. I feel for the guy!
70mph is the law, respect the law
All vehicles should be fitted with speed limiters
70mph is the top speed in the UK
Fix the speed limit to 70mph ON ALL VEHICLES
Speeding is not a criminal offence, charging someone for speeding is just another set of taxes
