A motorcyclist has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after crashing his bike in Newport overnight.
Both Police and paramedics were called to Staplers Road on the outskirts of the town as a result of the single vehicle collision.
Upon arrival of officers, the male was already in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and was being treated for minor injuries.
The motorcyclist was taken the short distance to St Mary’s Hospital where he was not only treated for his injuries, but also given a drugs wipe test to complete.
It took just a matter of minutes for the test to flag up that the rider potentially had both cannabis and cocaine in his system – Class B and Class A drugs respectively.
Officers duly arrested the man on suspicion of drug driving.
Sgt Winchester of C Shift has said:
”We will continue to provide a ‘Rolls Royce’ service to all those who use our island roads, ensuring that those who choose to put others at risk whilst driving under the influence are dealt with robustly”.

The police have the right attitude towards drug and drunk drivers but unfortunately the magistrates who are responsible for handing out the punishment don’t seem to be of the same mindset. Sentences in my opinion are way too lenient. These cretins who choose to drive a car or ride a motorcycle, could kill innocent people. They need bigger fines and if they say I haven’t got any money, take it directly out if their wages or benefits.
The police do a fantastic job, it’s a shame the courts don’t.
If caught drug or drink Driving, it should be Car or Bike gets crushed, automatic ban then a re-Test.
Custody images of those convicted should also be issued, so we all know who they are and if seen driving
can report it.
Let’s all keep our roads and island safe for all.
Vile low life, risking others lives.
gone are the days when you could only tell if someone was under the influence of cannabis when driving was because they were driving at 5 mph in a 60 zone, with their face 2 centimetres from the windscreen with a panicked look, because they felt they were still driving too fast.
You’ve clearly never smoked a joint casue it’s nothing like that lol
This man is incredibly lucky he escaped with minor injuries and that no one else suffered as a result of his decision to ride a motorbike whilst having consumed illegal drugs.
He should be heavily punished and banned for a long time. I assume that, if he is insured, he will have voided his cover as he was under the influence of drugs.
We need tougher sentences for riders and drivers who drive with illegal drugs and / or alcohol in their system.
I assume that, if he is insured, he will have voided his cover as he was under the influence of drugs.
That’s an incorrect assumption. The law says that insurance must ALWAYS cover any third party claim. They won’t pay on on his crashed bike though…or any personal injury claim that he might have.
Good job once again to the Police. It is a shame the magistrates don’t share the same enthusiasm to teach these cretins who drink/drug drive a harsh life lesson. In my opinion the sentences that are handed down by these judges are way too lenient.
Shame it wasn’t more seriously injured.
Marcus, not really. All that would have done is put a bigger strain on our emergency services. Undertaker would be OK, though.
Absolute state of you two, wishing strangers seriously injured or dead on the internet, what a sad lonely existence you have.
Good words bunch of planks when there is such other sad stories on here and wishing serious injury on someone messed up
Messed up comment
Delt with robustly jurys out on this one, but time will tell.
it won’t be long before new electric cars have immobilisers fitted that need a breath test to activate the power to the car.
you know, sit in the car, blow in the tube – it tests for alcohol and if you pass, you get power to the car. To ensure that no one else blows in if for you, the test kit would take an image of you blowing into it. The image and result would be held externally of the car and checkable for upto 28 days afterwards, before auto deleting
This will doubtfully happen… but self drive cars yes, so then one could be drunk, or high, or both..
Could of killed a innocent person low life scum
imagine if he hadn’t been caught drug driving, the comments section would look very different
To ‘Anonymous ‘ How would you like to be hit by a rider/driver that was under the influence ? Bet you would change your tone then…
Too many road users ‘feel’ they can drive better after a few drinks or after a few joints, a snort or two…./ it is the same old story… DO NOT use a vehicle whilst using alcohol or drugs.. simple !
I didn’t say it was ok but wishing someone serious injury isn’t ok
