After months of almost non-stop roadworks in the Ryde area, motorists won’t be best pleased to hear that a one-way system is to come into force on St John’s Hill on Monday (4th April).
In order for WightFibre to continue the upgrade the Island’s broadband capacity, a one-way system will be in place in a westbound direction, from Alexandra Road to Monkton Street, until 2nd May.
It means that motorists will be able to travel from the Oakfield area towards town, but those wanting to travel eastbound – for example towards Tesco – will have to divert via Smallbrook Lane or via the Esplanade and East Hill Road. Works are still continuing at Smallbrook Roundabout, however, with 3-way temporary traffic lights in force for another couple of weeks yet.
A spokesperson for Island Roads has said:
“As a utility company, WightFibre has a legal right to undertake such infrastructure work. Island Roads’ role is to work with them to reduce the impact on road users. To that end, we have asked WightFibre to carry out the work before the main tourism season and to wait until the Smallbrook junction roundabout safety works are nearing completion before carrying out this work.
“We will also monitor the effects of the traffic restrictions and take any appropriate action to ensure traffic flows are as smooth as possible. In addition, we will encourage WightFibre to complete the scheme as soon as possible in which case the restriction can be lifted ahead of the advertised dates”.
The one-way closure is expected to come into force from 07:00 on Monday morning.

The Statement released by Island Roads is just a standard Statement that has been released repeatedly everytime Shitefibre
plan an unexceptable disruption to the Island Tax Payers!
Is all of this because roadworks are still being restricted to EU rules of 1.5 m to be maintained between workers and passing traffic ? Obviously great care has to be taken but surely we can now make our own rules, which, perhaps, could be more flexible.

Why don’t Island Roads and Wightfibre plan their works. Why couldn’t the St Johns work be delayed until Smallbrook Junction is completed and in use? Pissups and Breweries come to mind as they seem determined to cause as much inconvenience as possible to everyone.

We have our fair share in freshwater there is not a road that shitefibre as littered with green barriers or temporary traffic lights. there seems to be no continuity in thier works. They set up temp lights and barriers then do naff all for a week or so. We have complained to shitefibre and laneso regarding frequent loud foul mouthed arguments between workmen outside our home and at one point they were racing a dumper and mini digger. Neither companies were interested and was passed from pillar to post. So probably expect them to set up temporary lights on all main routes and cause utter chaos over the Bank holidays like last year.

Ok IWCC and IR – Yes, utilities have a right to do works, and yes, they have an obligation to ensure safety but they also have an obligation to minimise disruption.

If these people, IR and WF actually did any work it would be a great thing. If there is anyone on site usually one is scratching their brains (?), one holding trousers up and one on their mobile at best. If a road has to be obstructed then, by law, there must be 24/7 working by sufficient persons to get the job done in absolute minimum time, or very hefty fines in place. Here we have the case where minimum effort is applied over the longest possible time, and to hell with the rest of us.
Nothing on the Southern Vectis website yet about which stops they won’t be servicing for the next month as a result of this.
Hopefully it’s only the Oakfield high street one – not that that’s any comfort for the poor Oakfield residents who hardly ever seem to have a full service these days.
As a wise old man once said ‘If a job is worth doing it’s worth doing right’. Shame island roads can’t do this, they resurface roads and within 18 months they are falling apart, it’s not just a re scimming that is required on the main roads and the utilities should be there at the same time, I spent some time in Germany and they get the job done in no time and it lasts if not heavy fines are encured. Go to an area put the manpower there and complete it in a week or two at the most, simples

Wightshit , the roads and pavements are an eyesore and a disgrace , all in the name of technology. Its been a mess from the start , this island has suffered so much , overloaded in every way , it can’t take much more. That money could have been invested better and more productive.
So I can go to the town using St John’s hill but I can’t come back. I will have to go via the Esplanade and Easthill Road – o wait – they are digging up the Esplanade!!! Couldn’t make it up!
