UPDATED WITH VIDEO: An area of marshland has been cordoned off by Police this afternoon (Wednesday), believed to be in relation to the search for missing pensioner Michael Davies.
Several units have descended on an area between Marsh Close and Brickfields Way off Fort Mews after being called to the scene at around 15:30. A police helicopter has circled the area.
Forensic investigators have arrived at the incident and are conducting investigations in the middle of a marsh field.
Island Echo understands the incident is in relation to the search for missing 71-year-old Michael Davies, who hasn’t been seen in over a month after going missing from nearby Hotel Maria.
UPDATE @ 17:40 – Hampshire Constabulary have this afternoon confirmed that the body of a male has been discovered and that the family of Michael Davies have been informed.
Island Echo understands the discovery was made after nearby business owners smelt a foul smell coming from the area.
It is currently unclear how long the body has been at the location and as to whether or not the area was part of a wide-scale search for the missing holidaymaker last month.
The death is not being treated as suspicious.
UPDATE TUESDAY 7TH JULY – Police have today officially confirmed that the body discovered last Wednesday is that of Michael Davies.
A post-mortem is due to be carried out and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
