A prolific criminal who stole a crate of beer from The Co-op has been ordered to pay compensation of £11.50. Kevin Greenwood, 44, of West Street in Ryde, admitted theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last week (Friday 26th April). Lauren Stone, prosecuting, told the court that on 27th January, Greenwood was seen entering The Co-op on Anglesea Street. Once inside, Greenwood headed straight for the alcohol section before leaving the store without paying. Employees in the store reviewed CCTV and immediately recognised the thief as Greenwood. The 44-year-old stole a crate of Budweiser worth £11.50 but the goods were never recovered. Greenwood has a total of 48 convictions for a total of 152 offences and appeared on Island Echo recently after being found guilty of numerous offences including fraud by false representation, theft from a person of another and burglary other than dwelling theft. Defending Greenwood, Oscar Vincent said that his client was easily detected following the ‘unsophisticated’ crime and that the behaviour was part of a larger spate of offending of which Greenwood has already been sentenced for. Magistrates ordered Greenwood to pay compensation of £11.50 to The Co-op.

Shame COVID Was not more selective when lethal
So this gives out the message leaving without paying is ok, worse case if you get caught you have to pay for it!!! This country has gone to the dogs, I reckon I can at least make 3 out of 4 stealing so good odds.
Too poor to pay a fine and court costs, but too busy working to do unpaid work hours, hes a true victim of the cost of living crisis, guys probably a real hard grafter and not some smackhead that broke into a football clubs locker room to steal jewellery, or stole a kids bag from a church nativity play.
Someone put this loser in the ground.
What Justice – Magistrates, Courts & MOJ, hang your heads in shame, this is not justice at all, 152 offences & 48 convictions! and on the last occasion all he does is just pay for his shopping!
Solicitors you may as well join them as well, trotting out the same excuses for everyone you represent, according to you lot 99.9% of people have the same issue. “Sorry but my Client has….” and ….”.
It’s about time shops had a system like “Pub Watch”, pass their details on to each other, pin their picture up behind the counter and ban them. They don’t necessarily need locking up, but managing by “Tag” with strict limitations imposed.
So if you go to the Co-op as a legitimate customer you will pay £11.50 for each case of Budweiser you purchase. If you don’t attempt to pay but get caught it still only closts you £11.50 and their is no penalty for the theft but there is a good chance that you will get away uncaught most of the time. Is it any wonder people who do this are frequent offenders? The courts need to be imposing some sort of penalty. If it is suggested that the penalty was included in the sentencing for the previous offences referred to the court should spell this out instead of leaving people who are inclined to dishonesty to believe they can get off scot free.
Magistrates are a disgrace.
Sounds like it’s worth the risk shop lifting if you have never been in trouble with the police like me if I was to get caught they would have to give me money
