A man has sustained a stab wound following an incident on Ryde Esplanade this afternoon (Tuesday).
Police were called at 12:59 to reports of an assault on Ryde Pier.
On arrival, officers located a man with a stab wound. He has since been taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was called in and landed at the hovercraft terminal.
A 30-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.
He remains in custody at Newport Police Station at this time.
Anyone with information can phone 101, with the reference 44200217589.

So someone comes over from Southampton on a ferry, and then proceeds to cause havoc. I hope the injured person recovers quickly. I’d like to know if the ferry company he travelled on asked why he was coming over. Sick.
Another, what’s happening !
I totally agree what is happening to the lovely Isle of Wight used to be a safe place to live but it seems like it’s going to the dogs police could sort this out as a lot of drinking and taking drugs happens down along the seafront this seems to be a problem every someone something needs to be done
Drugs….most likely. Collecting an unpaid debt
If the police could be persuaded to check the seafront gardens to the left of the pier on a more regular basis it would make it a safer and more pleasant environment for those of us who find the groups of drinkers and drug users there aggressive, loud and intimidating. Whose town is this?
The island use to be a safe place to live but over the last few years it’s changed and becoming more like the mainland we need more police on the streets and tougher laws this country is far to soft on criminal activities.
Absolutely agree Ant
WTF is wrong with all these morons?
People drinking and taking drugs, got nothing else better to do! People need to get back to work, or get a job!
Being out of bloody work is no exscuse for drinking and taking drugs and harming people it’s totally unacceptable!!
Drinking and taking drugs!
How do you know this???
It’s called observation. They can be really unpleasant, shouting, swearing. They have no right to subject others to such antisocial behaviour. This is everyone’s town and a few should not be allowed to behave like this in a public area.
Betty S…..Get back to work?? We’re hopefully coming towards the end of a pandemic which has decimated this country and caused the loss of hundreds upon thousands of jobs, and you want people to get a job! You’re not wired up right.
Well said Wibble
What is it with all these big boys using weapons, can’t fight or walk away so better to be a coward and use a weapon
Ryde is lovely place, get rid of the idiots! Well done to the police
Is Ryde the new Sandown?
Another moron comment! Probably living in bembridge do you Ron? Shit like this happens in every town in the country!
Worse!
Ron! The guy arrested was from Southampton, this could of happened anywhere..
so… numerous emergency services were deployed at great cost, just because some dickhead from southampton though it would be a good idea to knife some one. Whats the betting this was a fight over a can of lager or something else, equally as trivial.
What a prick
There could have been a call going in for an ambulance or that helicopter for someone who, through no fault of their own, needed immediate assistance and didn’t get it, because they were dealing with this.
Irrespective of the geographic location, there appears to be an element of society that are intent on causing harm, committing crimes, and just being disruptive with drugs and alcohol being a common denominator. Other European countries confiscate all the personal belongings of anyone convicted of crime, the articles are auctioned and the money raised pays towards their incarceration. Now that we’re out of the EU we should pass a law allowing the government to do as other countries do. Maybe, only maybe it would be the much needed deterrent for the scum and the dross of society, but I doubt it.
A 9mm sleeping tablet might be a better option or we’ll have to tolerate these miscreants for longer.
So no word from the council on all this latest violence & driving & drug offences taking place on the island ….are they turning a blind eye?
Punishment handed out for incidents like this are no deterrent. Until the law is changed and charges are harsher then this will go on and on. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Ryde as outbreaks on senseless stabbing could show its ugly head in any town on the Isle of Wight. For Christ’s sake chuck the druggies in jail .
I was born, and grew up on the island but moved to the mainland for work purposes in the early Nineties. When that work “dried-up”, I came back “home”. I decided, at that time that Ryde would be a good place to move to for work opportunities and access to the mainland etc. Several decades later, I’m still here, so am in a good position to see just what an absolute SH#T HOLE it’s become. The druggies, alcoholics and general trouble makers in and around the town, night and day make me very sad. I can’t see this ever changing for the better, unfortunately.
I moved off, can’t say I regret it at all, it’s not likely to improve post Covid either.
DRUGS. Got to be. Unpaid drug debts?
A friend of mine was on the number 3 early this morning going to work he said the driver had to stop at ventnor industrial estate because 2 blokes were drunk and kicking off one of them apparently urinated upstairs then a second driver of the bus coming the other way stopped and tried to help he said it was getting scary and apparently these blokes were from the mainland he said the driver called the police but they couldn’t attend he said the drivers handled it very well don’t know if it could be the same blokes maybe worth the police contacting southern vectis
Police should beat the tar out of the pair. Break jaws and say they resisted arrest.
‘Police couldn’t attend’ typical, are these the same police who don’t believe some drivers have been using the empty roads as racetracks
Exactly! Why couldn’t they attend? What were they doing? The writer said it was ‘early this morning’ not exactly the time for a crime wave is it?
Don’t have a fixed link all the trouble makers will come, well have a look no bridge but the scum still come lol
I bet this guy thought the Isle of Wight police were not going to catch him.
Wrong – if guilty I hope three courts jail him for a significant period.
Another waste of a future
More reasons not to visit!
Because we have no tourists on the island the police seem to be having a clear out of the local undesirables. I have noticed more druggie addicts than ever before. Seems they have come out of the woodwork. Hopefully the police can crack down and sort it out.
It is not that long ago that we were being assured that the installation of ‘Crime Busting’ cameras in Newport was going to spread to other areas… I have to wonder just how many of these idiots would be strutting around Ryde if they were being observed and reported on BEFORE it all kicked off! Tackling crime costs too much for our wonderful council leaders who don’t seem to care…. as usual!
