A man has been rushed to hospital after sustaining injuries in a crash between a car and a HGV on a rural country lane on the outskirts of Ryde this morning (Wednesday).
It was shortly before 08:30 that police, paramedics and firefighters were mobilised to West Lane, between Brading and Ashey.
It is on the backroad that a car travelling towards Ashey has struck the front corner of a Reynolds and Read lorry travelling in the opposite direction, resulting in damage to the front of both vehicles.
The driver of the car, a local male, has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance for further treatment and assessment.
The HGV driver has been uninjured.
West Lane is currently closed in both directions between the junctions of Harding Shute and Coach Lane Roundabout (High Street).

I navigate these roads (Ashey Road, Green Lane and Coach Lane) twice a day, everyday, and have done for five years. Everyday I say I cannot believe HGVs (Reynolds & Read, Westridge etc) use these roads at speed, and that there’s going to be an accident… Especially as horse riders use this road too. Surely there needs to be a width restriction? Reducing the speed limit won’t stop accidents due to blind bends and narrow roads. I’m certain that smartphones direct tourists arriving off the Fishbourne ferry [crawling] down these roads – and with all the roadworks on main road routes!
Didn’t notice the wheel marks in the verge then, probably from the R&R truck, or the green truck in front of the damaged car, the driver of the green truck managed to pass without hitting it. Maybe, inappropriate use of speed by the car driver?
That is because these Companies know that there are
no speed cameras.
The island is a dinosaur when it comes to road safety.
Place speed humps on bends, personally I would place
humps every so many yards, forcing vehicles to slow down
on “dangerous” bends.
You can’t stop yourself, can you?
A speed hump on a bend? I couldn’t imagine a more dangerous scenario? Still, it will give you plenty of opertunities to add your brainless comments on a regular basis without knowing the facts as your previous comments has proved.
A speed hump on every bend. Really?
I have more intelligent things running around the end of my pecker.
How about oil slicks too, on the bends?
Well said. And the speed limit is far too high for such a bendy hazardous road, especially as many morons consider it a target, not the absolute maximum.
More shit driving speed and wet conditions..
Motorists on the island go faster in wet conditions
Numpties!
I think just more shit driving. The standard of driving on the Island is appalling
It will be interesting to view the R&R drivers dash cam footage as there must have been some force to do that sort of damage.
Let’s hope it doesn’t miraculously get erased.
These roads are very narrow and dangerous especially
in wet conditions.
The times I have driven along such roads and it’s a
close shave, Whitwell Road is another one of these
roads.
The sooner self driving vehicles “ONLY” are on our
roads the better.
Self driving taxi’s are coming to Britain next year,
they work well in LA etc.
They don’t speed and handle oncoming traffic better
than humans.
I hope the driver is ok, cars can be replaced, persons
cannot!
You really are a complete loony
I’m just lonely
Lonely but not alone. Hahaha
You need to get out more.
Go to San Francisco, Waymo self drive taxis
are great, totally safe.
The REAL Enough is Enough, not the sad numpty
with only 21 posts to their name
Bless them, some jealous trolls in this world.
Ah, the irony from someone who really does need to ‘get out more’.
As of August 26, there have been 464 incidents in 2025 that have involved Waymo vehicles, as reported to the NHTSA. From these incidents, there was one fatality, one serious injury, two moderate injuries, and 28 minor injuries.
Need to qualify who was to blame, are the driverless cars hitting each other?
Are they being targeted by human drivers?
