Newport Road in Cowes is to close for up to 4 weeks as Southern Water return to carry out further work to the recently replaced water main and to improve the road surface.
Contractors Clancy Docwra and local water supplier Southern Water have written to local residents to warn that the main road will be closed from Three Gates Road to the Northwood Garage junction from next Monday (13th March).
The news comes just a year after a new 450mm water main was installed, which resulted in the road past BAE Systems being closed for over 2 months. When the road reopened, locals residents complained about the quality of the reinstatement work to the carriageway.
Peter Simmons, Infrastructure Project Manager for Southern Water has said:
“All our new pipes undergo stringent testing and commissioning before being put into permanent use. While most pass these tests first time, there are occasions when we need to return to make further checks and adjustments. We’ll also be carrying out further reinstatement work to the road surface.
“So we can do this work safely, Newport Road will be closed to through-traffic from its junction with Three Gates Road to the junction with Nodes Road, with a short diversion in place.
“We’ll do our best to maintain vehicle access for businesses and residents in both directions as much as possible, however there may be times when access is restricted in one part of the road closure, in which case vehicles will need to exit in the opposite direction and follow the diversion route if require. We know this will cause some more disruption – we’re sorry about this and we will be doing all we can to keep impact to a minimum and to re-open the road as soon as possible.
“We are committed to providing the best possible service while we are working in your community and we will finish the work as quickly as we can”.
6 weeks of water main replacement work in Brading started at the beginning of January, but 8 weeks later and the work is yet to be completed.
