The Isle of Wight will not have one of the first COVID vaccination hubs in the country — meaning Islanders may have to wait a bit longer for the groundbreaking vaccine.
Despite Bob Seely MP believing the Island would be a priority area for the COVID vaccine, given the older population, a list of NHS Trusts across the country has been published of hubs which will receive the first doses. The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is not on the list — with the nearest to the Island being Portsmouth Hospital University Trust.
The news isn’t entirely surprising given the low levels of infection locally, but the Isle of Wight does have a larger population of elderly residents – around 25%.
Speaking at the Downing Street briefing last night, Sir Simon Stevens, NHS chief executive, set out the details of who, when and how the vaccine would be rolled out in ‘the biggest vaccination campaign in history’ with the bulk of the vaccines delivered from January to April.
He said with the vaccines having to be so carefully controlled, being stored at -70°C and coming in packs of 975 doses, they cannot at this point be distributed to individual GPs and pharmacies.
The phasing of deliveries, Sir Simon said, will see more than 50 hospital hubs in England start to offer the vaccines to those at the top of the priority list from next week. This will be followed in subsequent weeks with GPs coming together in local areas to provide vaccination centres, asking people to come in for the vaccine on an invitation-only basis.
If the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency gives its approval to split the 975-dose packs then it would be possible to distribute the vaccines further to GP surgeries and pharmacies — which could mean some Islanders could get their first dose of the vaccination before the end of the year.
A letter to NHS Trust chief executives, sent at the end of November by those running the vaccination deployment programmes, has said if a trust is not a vaccination hub, a plan must cover how you will work with the nearest hub to vaccinate its workforce and how it would deliver the vaccine within the trust when it becomes possible.
Recommendations have been made by the government’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation on those who are of highest risk and should be vaccinated first, starting with those over 80, those in cares homes and some frontline care staff.
UPDATE @ 15:30 – Bob Seely MP has this afternoon said:
“There are three modes for vaccine roll-out: hospital hubs, vaccination centres and the community (via GPs). The maps doing the rounds today show only the first one of these: hospital hubs. Full plans are being worked on.
“Any implication that the Islanders will get the vaccine later than elsewhere is, to the best my knowledge, false. The Island, as I have said, is a priority area after Portsmouth. This has not changed.
“Hospitals named as hubs are generally major hospitals in major population centres. Portsmouth has been the priority in Hants and the IW because every area/region needs a single initial hub – the IW and Hants are grouped together for public health in this instance. It is also true to say that Portsmouth is treating a number of Covid patients – and staff are therefore at potentially higher risk.
“After Portsmouth Hospital, the Island, along with one or two other locations in the Hants/IW area, is part of phase two. That decision to ensure supply for the Island was a key consideration due to the potential vulnerability of supplying an Island rather than mainland centres.
“The current plan also includes a vaccination centre on the Island. This will be confirmed shortly.
“How vaccines are then distributed on the Island is then a matter for planning experts. This work is being done and was begun prior to vaccine approval. I thank the experts for their work. The experts have been mindful of the Island’s unique circumstances. I know this because I have spoken to them and which is why, after Portsmouth, delivery will be ensured to the Island.
“Some of the distribution of the vaccine may be done through GPs surgeries. This has always been a potential plan, in addition to a potential vaccination centre which is particularly important because the Island has a small dispersed population compared to cities.
“My recent statement to the IW media on the vaccine was checked and cleared by the IW NHS Trust to ensure accuracy. I have just come off the phone from public health experts to confirm this statement.”

And when it does come, please consider: the Government has given itself, manufacturers and anyone administering the vaccine complete immunity from any legal action or claim in the event of vaccine injury – reflect on that.
Exactly islanders.obv any thumbs down are from sheep.take no notice in it.
I have health conditions but im defo not taking a rushed money making vaccine just cos lying gov say so.its not been tested long term.you scaremongered outdoor mask wearers can …Just don’t moan when you get other poss health issues later on.doctors have no idea either so believe at your own peril
Just take the shot so us young ones can crack on with life 🙂
I hope you young ones are getting a shot then….
Halar.stand thumbs down from sheep
Wake up brainwashed
If they came up with the cure for stupid you wouldn’t take it would you. You’d probably research it on facebook and google then come to the conclusion that its a conspiracy.
Why aren’t the inactive ingredients of Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine available to inform people with allergies? Why on BBC just now did Jon Van Tam not know when they would be available from the manufacturer? And how did the vaccine get approved without this information?
Wouldn’t have it if they’d pay me.
If you catch the Virus, that comes free .
So I take it that if you contact covid you do not require treatment as you might infect others?
Can’t see why you bother to tell people that I have cancer so
You could give it to me and I would die but your one of many
who are very afraid of injections so I understand why you don’t
Want it
Pratt
Dummy
REal Islande, I have reflected on that and come to the conclusion that it is complete and utter nonsense. Do your research and stop putting out false and misleading statements….. In the USA many states have provided immunity from civil action against manufactureres. Any proven civil claims will be paid by the relevant state. In the UK, the law is clear. That law is similar to that in the states in that manufacturers, generally, cannot be sued by members of the public unless there is a case to answer re a ‘faulty batch’ or has failed to meet ‘safety standards’ and under those circumstances a group action for negligence would be the likely outcome. As for someone administering any vaccine, if they do it negligently, no matter what the vaccine is for, then they are not immune from a civil claim of negligence.
Because there is a virtual guarantee that in a major vaccination programme some people will be harmed or even killed by the vaccine, some countries have set up special public funds to pay compensation to those affected. The WHO supports this model of taxpayer-funded damages for vaccine claimants. The firm’s lawyers have demanded that clauses to that effect be put in their contracts with the countries AstraZeneca has agreed to supply with its Covid vaccine. The company says that, without such guarantees of indemnity, they would not be incentivised to produce the drug. And it seems most of the countries have ceded to this demand including Doris…if you don`t believe ask your MP…but he never answers.
And how many died of so called Spanish flu in WW1 and post war, they’d have given anything for a vaccine. You lockdown causing covid spreaders. Stay in your pens, keep us safe. Baaaahhhh!
As always conspiracy theorist like you. You’ve taken a small fact and twisted it push your lies.
What they have been given is the immunity from prosecution for supplying an unlicensed drug. We do not have time for the full licencing process. It is part of the 2012 Human Medicine Regulations where an unlicensed medication can be used in an emergency such as a pandemic.
What they have done is cut some red tape! That is all. Without it someone could sue them for supplying the drug without the correct paperwork.
I am no conspiracy theorist…I do facts…it generally takes 9 years to safely develop a vaccine, with all the proper testing that is required…this is rushed and cannot be have been properly tested, especially against long term effects. There are plenty of Professors and Doctors who say the same.
Quote from Dr. Mike Yeardon – “This is frightening. Please everyone; the only people who may choose vaccination are the most vulnerable few %. NO ONE ELSE SHOULD EVEN CONSIDER IT. You’re not at risk, so please don’t accept it. It plays no role in terminating pandemics. This has already happened, it’s endemic now.”
So we have to wait a bit longer that’s ok not going anywhere
Well I never believe anything until it is in the past tense. Years of experience.
Bob Seeley what does he know
He knows how to get voted in again..
You have to remember this is the “Isle Of Wight” who have never been top of any government list for anything without being asked to travel to the mainland to get it. Those in Westminster probably heard about the floating bridge and are assuming we can get to the north island on it, while Bob the sausage has got his mouth so full of barbecued pork ones he’s unable to put them straight.
This so called vaccine has not even been approved in America where it is made also if anyone dies from the vaccine the makers are not liable for any deaths,Take this vaccine at your risk, personally I’d rather catch the virus.only 1% die from contracting covid 19…..
The USA are likely using us to test it out first. Might be wise to at least wait a while to see if any terrible side effects are borne out when testing lots of diverse people.
I am not saying to take it or not, but it may be wise to wait a few months longer yet. I will.
Wasting time on here! Sheep are straight too thumbs down.funny tbf
It’s not so much about catching the virus but more about protecting the community and getting back to some sort of normal. If those of you that don’t want it don’t have it then be prepared to live with restrictions for a very long time.
I dont mind because the lockdown has not affected me in the slightest. Also I have never worn a mask…
USA would rather use bleach?
Get facts right the pfizer biontech vaccine is the GERMAN one, the American one is still under test and not approved by anyone. Perhaps you would rather try the Donald Trump suggested Vaccine/cure and inject bleach or swallow a uv light.
Ah, at last we agree Steve. Totally agree with your comment.
You are clueless its an American pharmaceutical company and that have bases around the world and ours is being mass produced in Belgium.FACT NOT FICTION!!!! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pfizer
Are you a real Dr?. Have you any qualifications regarding medical matters?. If not, piss off. We are all rejoicing with news of a vaccine.
You are clueless its an American pharmaceutical company and the have bases around the world and our is being mass produced in Belgium.FACT NOT FICTION!!!!
Ha well said, fake Dr, fake statistics, missinformation spreader.
Your horrible nasty rude individual…
Not claiming to be a doctor though is he!!
For your information, Pfizer is an American company, fact. They have many sites around the world. Pfizer is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies out there.
Hmmm, everyone is quoting different rates and percentages. 1% is still 1 in a 100 chance of popping your clogs going by your figure. I’d fancy those chances on the lottery, that would be great! But on my life…. no thank you!
600.000 odd deaths
I will wait until the guinea pigs have tried it first, good luck…
No surprise we’re not top of the list. The Island’s infection rate is super low. Having said that, there is no doubt in my mind that the Island care homes will be a high priority as they are in the rest of the UK . Where I see all this falling over is the logistics of keeping the Pfizer vaccine at -70 C until required…..
Bob Seeley the list of Hospitals came on line last evening, the care home let down again
Give the vaccine to the GP’s first. They are better qualified than most to judge it’s efficacy and will make a lot of noise if they judge it to be harmful.
Give it to M.P’s ,Councillors and those spending time at Her Majesties pleasure as a control group, monitor for 2 month to make sure there’s no side effects from both doses and then roll it out if safe to do so.
Why save these ???
Give it to the GP’s first then we might be able to meet them for the first time in six months.
Funny how the people you might need to help you suddenly disappear when the crunch comes.
The vaccination will be here soon. So let’s reflect on the words of our great Prime Minister, Maggie Thatcher when she heard the news of the sinking of the Argentinian ship Belgrano, “Rejoice, Rejoice Rejoice”
Maggie Thatcher a great Prime Minister………OMG!
War criminal!
Personally, I would prefer to see Boris (and his old man for that matter) have the vaccination first, and if they are ok in a few months time, I might give it a bash.
Boris is already safe
Well done Seeley yet again you have let the population of the Island down. You raise the hope of all those in Nursing and Care Homes and there families and then again they are let down. You consider yourself to be special and having knowledge of what is being planned when in fact you know nothing.
You are a disgrace and clearly like the Island Council and the floating bridge ‘unfit for purpose’.
The island is not held in high regard in Westminster. Ok to trial a phone app here that flopped and was totally useless and a complete waste of tax payers money. I think Bob thinks he’s ‘running with the big boys’ in London, NOT….
Well said Christopher
I’d be more worried if they did pick us to be first. It would confirm they were using us as guinea pigs again.
If you wanna take the “vaccine” then by all means take the “vaccine”. But don’t start having a go at the people who are awake enough to realise they’re being taken for a ride. You want to be scared witless like a little sheep, crack on and get your little injection. But you’d be bloody stupid to. If I’ve offended you with this comment, then that says it all really about yourself. Enjoy your untested, unsafe “vaccine” for a “deadly virus” which has a survival rate of 99.9%.
Well said, see these bed wetters that will run with open arms to get the vax, you know the type ,wear masks 24/7 and jump off the pavement into the road to avoid you, yeah that type, dont realise once they have the vax the restrictions will stay the same! Now for me and you and normal people, this doent make sense, but to the bed wetters,it adds to their safety. Ffs!
That’s not a conclusion you can come to by applying the rules of “justice, Mr”. Change your name!!
