A record-breaking amount was raised by the Long Lane Christmas Lights display in December, with the benefitting charity declaring the efforts of Terry and Sue Ramplin as ‘simply amazing’. Thanks to donations given by local residents and businesses, a staggering £5,774 was raised for IW Prostate Cancer Support Group in 2023 – that’s more than any other single year since the couple started their display in 2000. The monies raised will enable the Group to fund an entire testing session, during which around 360 men are expected to be tested for prostate cancer. This may well result in up to 40 men being identified as having unusual markers, enabling them to seek further – and potentially life-saving – medical support. IW Prostate Cancer Support Group has benefitted to the tune of more than £12,000 over the past 3 years, thanks to Terry and Sue’s fundraising efforts. Over the past 10 years alone the Ramplins have raised just under £45,000 for local charities. It is hoped that 5 prostate cancer screenings will be held across the Island this year, with more men than ever expected to turn out due to the King’s recent diagnosis.
The Ramplin’s donation is the highest amount the Support Group have ever received from any individual or organisation. Speaking to Island Echo, Terry said:
“Without the public coming forward and putting money in the pot, and the generosity of local businesses, it simply wouldn’t be possible to hand over this cheque. “This year was particuarly bad in terms of the weather but we still raised a fantastic amount for this important charity”.
Long Lane Christmas Lights will return in December – and will once again feature on Island Echo’s Light up the Wight. You can read more about the competition and map at www.islandecho.co.uk/xmas.
