Island nut grower, Mike King – also known as the Nutty Farmer – received national recognition taking 2nd and 3rd places in the cobnut class at the National Fruit Show at the Kent County Showground late last year.
Although the competition took place in November only the winners were announced at the time, whilst the other prizes were sent by post and thanks to postal strikes notification was only received just before Christmas.
Mike runs Stockbridge Nuttery based in Whitwell and grows cobnuts, Walnuts, Almonds and Sweet Chestnuts. The business started when he planted about 100 trees in 2016.
Mike said:
“We are just starting to get our first good crops so to do so well is very encouraging. We got full marks for being disease free which is encouraging given we use no fertilizers or chemicals. We also got 90% for taste.”
