UPDATED: LIFEBOATS LAUNCHED IN SEARCH FOR ‘DINGHY’ OFF THE ISLE OF WIGHT

2 lifeboats and a Coastguard Rescue Team are involved in the search for an object floating in the water on the coast of the Isle of Wight this afternoon (Tuesday).

Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat is currently conducting a search along the coast between Ventnor and Culver Cliff, with Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat conducting a similar search further out to sea.

Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team have headed to Shanklin Seafront with officers conducting a visual search of The Bay Area also.

Island Echo is told they are looking for a dinghy, which is possibly upturned.

UPDATE @ 17:28 – Search teams have been stood down with nothing found.

UPDATE @ 19:30 – It has been confirmed that search and rescue resources were looking for a red 12ft dinghy that had been reported as drifting off Ventnor.

Bembridge’s All Weather Lifeboat was called in due to the sea conditions offshore (SSW F5) but after a thorough search the lifeboat was stood down and recovered to the boat house by 18:15.

Was on Culver down could see lifeboats, could also see a white dinghy, the lifeboat was about a mile away and turned to port, vis not good even with binoculars, lost sight of dinghy, was unaware of being a shout, Tuesday usually training!
