A cat who is often to be found cheering up patients while ‘doing the rounds’ at St Mary’s Hospital has returned home after his concerned owner put out an appeal.
Leo was reported missing from Newport last Friday (8th September). Members of the public were quick to share their encounters with him on social media, with 1 calling him a ‘hospital legend’.
A recent visitor to the hospital said:
“We met him on a late night trip to A&E and my 8-year-old fell in love with him, he was so friendly!”
Another echoed the sentiment:
“He was up A&E during the night having a snooze on 1 of the chairs. Definitely made mine and my sons night seeing him.”
Thankfully, Leo has since returned home and is said to be safe and well. His owner, Meghann Carter, has now set up a dedicated page to keep tabs on her beloved moggy. She’s said:
“We are so grateful for everyone’s posts and love to see he makes people happy. He is a very loved member of our family and we adore him and just want to keep him safe.”
It is often said that medicine is a vocational discipline and it seems that Leo has a natural flair for lifting spirits.

Well done Leo!
A good news story.
This is disgusting, so unhygienic and what about those with allergies?
You are not a pet lover then Sarah.?
Animals are very therapeutic especially in times of stress and illness. What better way to take your mind off of a long wait in a&e than stroking a lovely friendly cat.?
Humans are more disgusting and unhygienic than any animal I’ve known, you only need to do a swab test on the toilet door handles and toilet seat and mobile phones to see the germs there, but humans don’t bother to wash their hands afterwards. Then they’ll start eating or playing with their child, and you are worried about a clean cat that washes itself.?
I would rather spend an hour in a&e with a dozen cats than a dozen people.
You are so correct!
Cats are much better company than most humans including Sarah given the nature of her comment!
I prefer my dog to most people… 🙂 Including Sarah.
Yeah, cats don’t spread covid of E. coli- filthy humans do!!!
Cats are lovely friends and clean animals. Shame for those who dislike them.
Bore off you miserable so and so! This is a nice story… I’m guessing you are probably the type of person that likes misery!
Sadly humans are more unhygienic those who don’t wash or brush their teeth,I’d rather see a cat than a human and animals have much better tolerance for others unlike some humans
No logic to be had here You say hygiene, they say cat…hygiene, cat, hygiene, cat!
I don’t know who you are Sarah , but I certainly know what you are.?.. Think I’d prefer Leo’s company..any day of the week. Glad he’s safe.
I’m with you on this Sarah. Mucky animals should not be in hospitals spreading disease and allergens. That is obvious to anyone. Cats can transmit toxoplasmosis and other diseases.
Noone appreciates your opinion…. Leo brings more joy to others then you probably do!
Sorry Dotty but you are full of it. I spread joy wherever I go and make the world a happier place with my quick wit and infectious smile. Obviously, I also like to avoid infectious diseases.
You said you have an infectious smile, you didn’t really do well to avoid catching an infectious disease did you.
Cats are far more likely to make people smile than you are any day.
Some countries eat cats, others worship them. I know which country I’d rather live in.
Well wear a mask
Humans spread much more like diarrhoea, flu and covid, hate with their toxic tongue. Cat’s give nothing but love.
Unless you are one of the billions of birds that cats kill every year for fun. Those birds aren’t feeling the love. Cats should not be fed by their owners. Then see how long they last on a diet of birds, mice, and rats.
You’re right, people with allergies should be considered.
The vast majority of islanders are allergic to absolutely toads like you Sarah, so please let us know your address so we can deport you.
Few yrs ago now I ended up in with trapped twisted bowel y waiting outside I remember this cat he jumped up ok he didn’t completely take my mind of pain but say diverted it very welcome diversion so thank u Leo xxxxx
Think he may have gone back. There was a ginger Tom relaxing outside the main entrance this morning. About 10:30.
Nothing wrong with a ginger Pussy Cat.
Leo looks a beauty
Nice to see the saddos out in force again!! Who needs RAAC when we have degrading saddos around like this!! A little bit of nice news and out they flood, pouring trouble on calm waters!!!
Much rather see a kind gentle cat than these miserable lot any day.
Get a life pleeeeze
