A public toilet block in Ryde could be shut down due to anti-social behaviour issues and legionella risks.
It has been revealed that the public toilets at the top of St John’s Road face closure due to their position ‘out of town’.
At a Ryde Town Council meeting on Monday, councillors agreed to look for a new public toilet located in the centre of the town and consult over the closure of the ones on St John’s Hill.
Town council clerk, Lisa Dyer, said one of the reasons the Town Council had looked into closing the toilets was because of the continually high legionella readings, which meant they had to be closed. The council understood it was happening because of the lack of water running through the system, leading them to believe they were not very well used.
Ms Dyer said they were getting constant reports of anti-social behaviour, with the toilets blocked by needles and people did not want to go in there. The theory was, she said, if toilets were close to town, they would be more visible and easily managed.
The council’s facilities and assets sub-committee had agreed to close the toilets, once plans and costs had been worked out to provide toilets that were more centrally located and more modern. However, concerns raised by councillors saw a change in that decision.
Ward Councillor Karen Lucioni said she had never had a complaint made to her about the toilets and Councillor Les Kirkby argued they were used very regularly by older people making their way home from the shops back to Haylands.
It was agreed the matter would be discussed again at the facilities and assets sub-committee, with an option to keep the toilets open while providing a new public toilet provision in the centre of town.
Ryde Town Council will be taking on the cleaning of all of its public toilets from 1st October after receiving constant complaints the cleaning was ‘substandard’.

Why does Ryde Town Council have to take on the cost of cleaning the toilets, it is the IW Council’s responsibility and up to them to monitor their contractors, it seems we pay more and more council tax for less and less.
better cleaning is the answer, not using it as an excuse lisa- we are not stupid
We’ll just shit on the pavement then like they do in 3rd world countries.
You can put poop bags in any bin you know.
Stupid place for toilets, can’t imagine a tourist has ever found them. Why these councillors are defensive about them god only knows.
Get some open centrally pronto and stop procrastinating.
If you bothered to look at a map of Ryde, you maybe be surprised to see that the loos in question are in the middle (center) of the town,
these public conveniences are not just for the tourist.
Plus, blaming the closure on anti social behaviour…..BS.
RTC…..Don’t p**s on our backs and tell us it is raining !
never liked using them, as drug addicts were always in there
My thoughts exactly.Seedy looking too.Could be mistaken for new build.
Out of town, no it isn’t, I bet this is all the idea of Phil Jordon no doubt, all the other wimps on the council won’t stand up to him of course.
continually high legionella readings, I don’t think so. No water tanks in that building. No showers. Mains water only. No heating. No hot pipes next to cold pipes. Let’s see the readings. And if there was a risk why not rectify the issue.
The best way to stop the drug use would be to shut the crack den up the rd, ooops sorry I mean the Salvation Army site! Full of the dregs of society that all need a bullet in the head! Any one that dosnt agree should pop in there for a visit or park in the car park behind and watch the drug deals being done, all about 100 yards away from the police station!!
Wow.These people walk amongst us.
What do you mean don?
So many toilets close early on the Island.
P*ssing up walls and trees is what this Island is becoming.
I called in a few days back. All was clean & tidy in the late afternoon. Very handy being in town. This Legionella excuse is just that. The same Legionella excuse is being trolled around over the temporary toilets near Ryde bus station. Funny how public toilets operated for many decades & nobody died. This country is going backwards
Why are the Police not tackling the Anti Social behaviour. Why are there always drugged and drunks hanging around on the corner ? Some people are afraid to walk past there, due to the abuse.. and the mess. They need to clean up that corner, and that area behind the launderette… disgusting area.
Who goes into a public toilet, when one sees a drunk or druggie in there.. and who would want to be in there when one comes in…??? Police need to move those types away from there… send them back to mainland where they came from…
