This is your weekly round-up of some of the latest court cases heard at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.

Monday 25th November – Friday 29th November 2024
• Leon Gladdis, 27, of HMP Guys Marsh, admitted driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance and driver of a vehicle failing to report a road traffic accident. He was handed Gladdis a 12-week prison sentence for driving whilst disqualified and another 12-week, concurrent sentence for the offence of failing to report a road traffic accident. Gladdis also saw his current ban extended by a further 12 months, meaning he is currently banned from the roads for a further 2 years 6 months and 11 days.
• Phillip Nelson, 46, of St Thomas’ Street in Ryde, admitted possess a controlled drug of class-B (cannabis). He was handed an £80 fine.
• Paul Smart, 38, of Orchardleigh Road in Shanklin, admitted theft from a shop. He was ordered to pay compensation of £22.90 to The Co-op
• Ashleigh Garrett, 30, of Furrlongs in Newport, admitted drink driving and possession of a controlled drug of class-B (cannabis). Garrett was banned from the roads for 40 months and fined her £300. She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £120 surcharge fee.
• Daniel King, 50, of no fixed abode, admitted drunk and disorderly in a public place. He was handed a 6-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £26 surcharge fee.
• Chloe Baile, 51, of Hillcrest Road in Rookley, admitted drink driving. She was handed a 40-month driving ban and fined £120. She was also ordered to pay costs of £300 and a £48 surcharge fee.
• Steven Yeo, 27, of Park Road in Ryde, admitted drunk in charge of a child under the age of 7. He was fined £280.
• Ben Hayman, 45, of Arctic Road in Cowes, admitted obstruct/resist a constable in the execution of their duty and possession of a bladed article in a private place. He was handed a 12- week prison sentence suspended for 18-months with a 6-month drug rehabilitation order attached. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £154 surcharge fee.
• Tammi Edwards, 39, of Park Road in Shanklin, admitted persistently make use of public communication network to cause annoyance/inconvenience/anxiety. She was handed a 12-momnth community order with 10 rehabilitation activity days attached. She was also fined £40 and ordered to pay costs of £40 and a £114 surcharge fee.
• Ashley Wenham, 37, of Copse End in Sandown, admitted drink driving and driving without insurance. He was banned from driving for 6-months and saw his licence endorsed. He was also fined £250 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £100 surcharge fee.
• Lee Niccolls, 48, of Great Preston Road in Ryde, admitted drug driving (BZE) and driving without insurance. He was banned from driving for 16 months and fined £120. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.
• Thomas Evans, 36, c/o Trafalgar Road in Newport, admitted 2x assault by beating and theft from a shop. He was ordered to pay compensation of £300 – £200 and £100 respectively – to the injured parties and a total of £4.65 compensation to Red Funnel.
• George Swain, 26, of Mary Rose Avenue in Wootton, admitted assault by beating. He was fined £200 and ordered to pay compensation of £100.
• Murray Grant, 65, of The Strand, Ryde pleaded guilty to driving without insurance. He was fined £80, handed 6 penalty points on his licence and ordered to pay a £32 surcharge.
• Michael Elms, 37, of Central Way, Sandown pleaded guilty to failing to stop after aroad accident, drink driving and driving without due care and attention. He was banned from driving for 20 months, fined £300 and ordered to pay £85 costs.
• Kevin Hickey, 50, of Wavesound Close, Bembridge pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug of Class B – Cannabis / Cannabis Resin. He was handed a 6-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £26 surcharge.

There is a saying: ‘Culture eats strategy for breakfast‘. The culture we have allowed to thrive, and take a firm grip, in the UK is one of disrespect, lack of discipline, laziness, selfishness and greed. Until this culture is changed, no strategy (fines, threat of imprisonment, courses etc) will work. Unfortunately, this change of culture is very, very difficult unless firm discipline is implemented in the home and school from an early age. I can’t see this ever happening now: That ship sailed long ago; that genie is out! I’m just glad I lived through the 60s, 70s and 80s. Those were the best years we will ever see.
