controlburningdameanthonys3UPDATED: Firefighters are responding to a large fire in the open at Dame Anthony’s Common in Binstead this morning (Friday). 

Crews are attempting to locate a suitable access point to get close enough to the fire to tackle it.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the flames and smoke – which can be seen for some distance – at just before 11:15.

1 pumping appliance and the 4×4 Land Rover, both from Ryde, have been mobilised.

UPDATE @ 11:50 – Crews have relocated from Upton Road in Haylands to Newnham Road in Binstead, where they have been able to access the private field in which the fire is located.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service say the blaze is controlled burning. The land owner is now on scene.

UPDATE @ 12:10 – Satisfied that the land owner is present and the fire is controlled, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have now stood down.
