Islanders are being urged to show their support as the Isle of Wight has once again been shortlisted as the ‘Most Desirable Island in Europe’ in the prestigious Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards.
This marks the second consecutive year the Isle of Wight has been recognised in the category, which is decided entirely by public votes. With more than 200,000 individuals expected to take part, competition will be fierce, with the Island going head-to-head against destinations including Santorini and the Isles of Scilly.
The awards, described as the UK’s biggest consumer-voted travel honours, also feature a prize draw for participants, with a prize pot worth £70,000. Rewards include a 5-star full-board stay in the Maldives, a 13-day expedition for 2, and a luxury holiday villa stay in Corfu for six people.
Will Myles, Managing Director at Visit Isle of Wight, has said:
“Please take a few minutes to vote, to show your support for the Isle of Wight as the Most Desirable Island in Europe.
“It’s all too easy for a small minority to knock the Island we love, but we are proud of where we live and by working together, we can get the Isle of Wight to the top of these prestigious awards.”
Highlighting the importance of the accolade, Will added:
“The Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards are seen as one of the top accolades in the industry. Wanderlust is a global brand, and the recognition for winning this award will also be global – we want to give the Island the best chance and urge everyone to vote.

Voting is open until 27th October and takes around 5 minutes to complete. To qualify for entry into the prize draw, participants must have a Facebook or Instagram account.

I won’t bother mentioning all the derelict hotels on the
island, and the eyesores in Ryde – the old ice rink and old
holiday camp at Appley, not to mention the old beach huts
along the duver in St Helen’s.
It is going to take years to posh up the island.
Friendly, relaxed most of our bus drivers are always v. Helpful even go out of their way. Lovely scenery

It’s ironic that the holiday you could win is in Corfu. The island is beautiful, but unfortunately not unspoiled. Attractions are hideous in price, and if it rains, the sea is full of effluent. High streets are depleted, and the roads are jammed with traffic. Corfu, on the other hand……..
After this year’s roadworks fiasco between Cowes and Newport and the influx of ‘newcomers’, I can’t possibly recommend this Island!

surely it should be the visitors that decide which is best not the locals.
The results will be worthless, not reflective of the reality.
In years to come the figures will be used to say how well the Island was considered but not revealing that it was the locals that said so after being offered a prize for voting.
