PHOTOS: ISLE OF WIGHT REMEMBERS ITS GLORIOUS DEAD ON REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 2023

Hundreds of Islanders gathered in the late Autumn sunshine at St Thomas’ Square in Newport this morning to remember the fallen from 2 World Wars and other conflicts on Remembrance Sunday 2023. On this special day, the Isle of Wight and the rest of the country commemorates the service and sacrifice of those defending our freedoms and protecting our way of life. It can be justly said of the slain that: “for your tomorrow, we gave our today”. The Remembrance Day Parade marched through Pyle Street, St James Square and the High Street. His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant Susie Sheldon took the salute outside Boots Chemist’s. Those taking part in the parade included military veterans, army reserves, cadets, scouts, beavers, brownies, and local dignitaries. Musical accompaniment to the service at St Thomas’ Square was provided by a highland piper. Present at the service was Royal Engineers veteran Ron Bostwick with his family. Ron took part in the testing of nuclear weapons on Christmas Island as a 19-year-old sapper in 1956/57. He suffered from radiation poisoning as a consequence.
