Local Isle of Wight author Kathryn Rossati has seen her latest novel, Naturally Nic/k, shortlisted for the prestigious Rubery Book Award 2025 in the Children’s and YA category.
Kathryn, who writes middle grade and young adult fiction and is also a poet, brings themes of neurodivergence and magic into her time-slip novel, which judges praised for its fresh and original approach.
Naturally Nic/k follows Nic, a girl from the present day who struggles with bullying and school life, and Nicolai, a boy from Victorian London whose father is a magician performing in the Thames Tunnel. When Nic’s best friend gifts her an old diary, she discovers descriptions of new tricks – and on a school trip to the Thames Tunnel, she’s transported back in time. There, she meets Nicolai, the diary’s original writer, and together they try to uncover why so many children are disappearing from London’s streets.
The Rubery judges praised the novel for its evocative setting, strong sense of atmosphere, and touching friendship between the two characters, calling it ‘an original and enjoyable historical adventure’.
Kathryn, who is an AuDHD and disabled author, said she hopes the shortlisting helps shine a light on stories that embrace neuro-divergent characters and magical storytelling for young readers.
