Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight has been awarded more than £8,200 in funding from WightAID, helping secure the team’s place at this Summer’s Special Olympics Great Britain Summer Games.
The grant, believed to be the largest ever given by WightAID, will enable Island athletes to travel to Birmingham this August to compete on a national stage.
The team will head to the Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr, where they will represent the Isle of Wight in a range of sporting events.
Organisers say the funding will cover travel, accommodation and essential support to ensure athletes can compete at their best throughout the Games.
Participation in the Special Olympics is about more than medals, with a strong focus on confidence, inclusion and building lasting friendships.
A spokesperson for Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight has said:
“For our athletes, this isn’t just a trip, it is an opportunity to represent the Isle of Wight, showcase their incredible talent, and challenge perceptions of what people with intellectual disabilities can achieve.
“This support builds confidence, fosters lifelong friendships, and turns dreams into reality.”
The charity has also issued a heartfelt thank you to WightAID and its donors, highlighting the impact the funding will have in removing barriers often faced by athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Preparations are now underway as athletes, coaches and volunteers gear up for the journey to Birmingham, with hopes high of making the Isle of Wight proud on the national stage this summer.

Special Olympics Great Britain is a fantastic organisation that enables those with intellectual disabilities a chance to compete nationally at The GB Summer or Winter Games and internationally at the World Games. Through Sport with Special Olymipics those with interlectual disabilities gain confidence and in many cases it gives them the confidence to get employment.
As a parent of a Special Olympian who has represented Great Britian in the Special Olympics World Games I have seen how my son gained freinds and also gained employment
To each and everyone of the Special Olympics athletes going the World Summer Games in Birmigham have a great time make friends and above all enjoy taking part in your various sports
